Malayalam cinema is giving the trade two very different box office case studies this week. Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju’s Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is in its fourth week and still adding over Rs1 crore net on a weekday. Dulquer Salmaan’s I’m Game is in its second week with a smaller show base and lower occupancy. For distribution and media planning teams, the contrast is less about favourites and more about momentum, screens and overseas recoveries.
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit: Rs312.40 crore worldwide
On day 27, the film collected Rs1.25 crore India net from 1,413 shows, as reported by Sacnilk. Its India net total now stands at Rs151.15 crore and India gross at Rs176.50 crore. The overseas side added Rs40 lakh on the day, taking the overseas gross to Rs135.90 crore and the worldwide gross to Rs312.40 crore.
The Malayalam version contributed Rs1.15 crore from 1,254 shows at 21 per cent occupancy, while Tamil and Telugu versions added Rs5 lakh each. That split matters: the hold is concentrated in the core Malayalam market, with dubbed versions contributing modest but stable numbers.
I’m Game: Rs47.69 crore worldwide in week two
I’m Game collected around Rs9 lakh India net on day 14 from 296 shows, with overall occupancy of 13.1 per cent. Its cumulative India net is around Rs25.31 crore and India gross is about Rs29.49 crore. Overseas gross is Rs18.20 crore, taking the worldwide gross to Rs47.69 crore at the end of day 14.
The film, a fantasy action title directed by Nahas Hidhayath, is being compared with a much older release, so the raw totals are not a like-for-like race. But the daily trajectory is useful. A day earlier, it earned Rs11 lakh net from 333 shows at 14.8 per cent occupancy.
Reading the box office beyond the headline
- Per-show value separates the two. Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’s day 27 average is roughly Rs8,800 per show; I’m Game’s day 14 average is closer to Rs3,000 per show. This is a stronger indicator than total gross alone.
- Overseas contribution is a large chunk. Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’s overseas gross is about 43 per cent of its worldwide total; I’m Game’s overseas share is about 38 per cent. International rights remain a major recovery line for Malayalam titles.
- Occupancy guides screen decisions. A 21 per cent occupancy across 1,254 Malayalam shows supports holding screens in week four. A 13.1 per cent occupancy on 296 shows suggests I’m Game may need show rationalisation or a stronger weekend hold to justify its current footprint.
Why this matters for the trade
For advertisers and programmers, a Rs300 crore-plus regional grosser is a reach vehicle with a clearly defined core audience. A smaller ensemble-led title with lower occupancy may still matter for male-skewing genre programming, but its marketing spend should be tied to specific show boosts rather than broad exposure. The real takeaway is to monitor the per-show average and version-level occupancy before committing additional inventory or partnership budgets.
