Mandaadi vs Sardar 2: Week-One Gap in Numbers

The first seven days have produced a decisive split between two Tamil releases. Soori’s Mandaadi has built a commanding lead over Karthi’s Sardar 2, with both films having opened on September 10 in Tamil and Telugu markets.

The week-one gap

As of Day 7, Mandaadi has crossed Rs 54 crore in India net collection and Rs 75 crore in worldwide gross, according to Sacnilk trade estimates. On Thursday alone, it added Rs 3.50 crore India net from 3,633 shows. The Tamil version contributed Rs 2.80 crore from 2,525 shows with 24.1% occupancy, while the Telugu version added Rs 70 lakh from 1,108 shows at 21%.

Sardar 2 is running well behind. On Day 7 it collected Rs 66 lakh India net from 2,277 shows. Its totals now stand at Rs 14.51 crore India net, Rs 16.99 crore India gross, and Rs 21.64 crore worldwide gross. Its Tamil version earned Rs 42 lakh from 1,434 shows at 14% occupancy, and the Telugu version added Rs 24 lakh from 843 shows at 14%.

The films are not mirror images. Mandaadi is built around a coastal world and boat racing; Sardar 2 is a spy-action sequel. Overseas, Mandaadi added Rs 1.25 crore on Day 7, lifting its overseas gross to Rs 11.90 crore. Sardar 2’s overseas gross remains at Rs 4.65 crore.

What the occupancy numbers signal

The most useful data point for exhibitors is not the collection gap—it is the occupancy gap. Mandaadi’s Tamil shows are holding around 24%, roughly 10 percentage points higher than Sardar 2’s Tamil version. That suggests demand is still pushing Mandaadi’s show count, while Sardar 2 may face screen rationalisation in week two unless weekend occupancy recovers.

For the trade, this is the difference between a film that can defend its screens and one that may start losing them to newer releases. The show-count split on Day 7—3,633 for Mandaadi against 2,277 for Sardar 2—already reflects that allocation logic.

Why this matters for the broader market

This comparison matters beyond Tamil Nadu because it shows how two local-language releases can compete in overlapping Telugu and Tamil circuits. The numbers also shape downstream decisions:

  • For exhibitors: weekday occupancy is the clearest indicator of whether to hold or reallocate screens in the second week.
  • For marketers: Mandaadi’s genre positioning around a coastal world and boat racing appears to be sustaining interest, while the action-sequel route is facing a tougher hold.
  • For content and licensing teams: a stronger theatrical hold can improve the post-theatrical streaming window and licensing conversation, especially if a film maintains momentum beyond the first week.

The second week will now test whether Mandaadi can extend its lead and whether Sardar 2 can improve its Tamil and Telugu occupancies. The early gap, however, puts the burden on the Karthi starrer to show that it can hold its current screens before the next slate of releases arrives.
