Haiwaan Day 6: India Net Falls To ₹9.30 Crore

Haiwaan is falling deeper into a box-office trough. The Priyadarshan-directed film, led by Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar, collected only ₹55 lakh net in India on Wednesday, according to Sacnilk data cited by The Times of India. That takes the six-day India net total to ₹9.30 crore.

The film casts Saif Ali Khan as Shyam, a blind building maintenance manager, and Akshay Kumar as Parshuram, a serial killer seeking vengeance. A clear premise, however, has not translated into ticket-window legs.

The six-day pattern

The picture opened at ₹3 crore on Friday and closed the opening weekend at ₹7.35 crore net in India. Monday dropped to ₹70 lakh, and the trend held near that level before Wednesday’s decline. In total, the first three weekdays added roughly ₹1.95 crore net.

  • Opening weekend share: ₹7.35 crore of the ₹9.30 crore total, or about 79%, came in the first three days.
  • Midweek slide: Wednesday’s ₹55 lakh is about 21% lower than Monday’s ₹70 lakh, indicating weak audience expansion.
  • Overseas: The film added ₹10 lakh gross internationally on day six, taking the overseas total to ₹3.25 crore gross.
  • Worldwide gross: ₹14.36 crore.

The reported production budget is ₹100-115 crore, though the makers have not confirmed it. If that range is accurate, six-day India net has recovered less than 10% of the lower end of reported cost. That leaves a steep recovery gap before marketing and distribution spend is even considered.

Why this matters for the business

For entertainment marketers and media planners, the opening-weekend to weekday ratio is a sharper early indicator than the opening-day number. A film that opens at ₹3 crore and cannot hold even a one-crore weekday is not converting initial sampling into midweek demand. That signals the theatrical audience has not expanded beyond the first-mover segment.

One useful mental model is the opening weekend contribution ratio. For a film with healthy word-of-mouth, the opening weekend usually does not account for nearly 80% of the six-day total because weekdays remain meaningful. When that ratio is very high, the film is front-loaded and the audience is narrowing quickly. Haiwaan is now showing that profile.

For streaming and platform buyers, a fast-falling theatrical run changes the post-theatrical valuation. The title may still have library or niche value, but weak weekday momentum weakens its case as a premium acquisition or high-impact promotion anchor. Buyers should look for genre-fit and audience-intent signals rather than assuming star-led casting automatically creates streaming pull.

The takeaway

Haiwaan is shaping up as a case study in theatrical downside risk. After six days, the domestic total is close to its opening weekend, and worldwide gross remains far below the reported budget range. For distribution, exhibition and licensing teams, the number to watch next is whether the coming weekend reverses the weekday trend or confirms it.
