Netflix Spain's 8-film slate bets on remakes and star power

Netflix’s Spanish film slate for 2026 and early 2027 is shaping up as a deliberate mix of remakes, literary adaptations and director-driven thrillers, with the streamer stepping up its local production volume.

The slate includes eight titles profiled in What’s on Netflix’s latest Spanish preview. Two are locked for year-end 2026: Mariano Barroso’s El Niño (The Child) on November 27 and Oriol Paulo’s En Nombre de Otro (Proxies) on December 11.

Year-end titles set the tone

En Nombre de Otro stars Mario Casas, Eduard Fernández and Blanca Suárez in a Christmas Eve confession story that connects to a closed case. Paulo has already delivered The Innocent and Last Night at Tremore Beach for Netflix, so the thriller arrives with a built-in audience.

El Niño, based on Fernando Aramburu’s novel, deals with the real 1980 gas explosion in a Vizcaya town. It gets a limited theatrical run in the US and select territories on November 13 before streaming on November 27. That window gives a small theatrical buffer before the platform date, and it stars Belén Cuesta alongside Karra Elejalde.

A Spanish remake of the Danish Netflix original Loving Adults has already wrapped in Barcelona. The adaptation is expected in late 2026 or very early 2027, with Hugo Silva and Leonor Watling leading and Esther Acebo in the third corner of the triangle.

IP and familiar faces do the heavy lifting

The longer pipeline underlines a clear strategy: borrow story equity where possible, and attach local stars who already have Netflix recognition.

  • Rayden adaptation: Kike Maíllo directs the rom-com El acercamiento de la mujer cactus y el hombre globo with Macarena García and Carlos Cuevas. Maíllo’s Dos Tumbas reached the Global Top 10s in summer 2025.
  • French remake: Rata adapts the comedy Radin! with Paco León as a penny-pincher whose newly discovered daughter disrupts his system. Shooting began mid-October 2026; a release is not expected until 2028.
  • Literary classic: Mar Coll’s contemporary take on La Regenta stars Ester Expósito and was announced in October 2026. The director says the adaptation focuses on “the loneliness and heartbreak of this regent’s wife”. It is unlikely before 2028.
  • 35mm genre play: Álex de la Iglesia’s La Cuidadora shot in Madrid on 35mm from early June to late July, pairing Carmen Maura and Blanca Suárez, and is expected next year.
  • Boxing biopic: Miguel Herrán heads an untitled Poli Díaz film, which began filming in October 2025 in Madrid and Segovia.

What media planners should track

For entertainment marketers, the useful signal is cadence, not just cast. Only two films have firm 2026 dates; several are 2028 plays, so 2027 planning should not treat this as fully available inventory.

The remake and book-adaptation weighting reduces discovery risk, but it also means campaigns need to explain why a familiar story is worth watching again in Spanish. Titles with theatrical windows, like El Niño, can be marketed earlier and sustained through the streaming date.

Watch whether director names – Paulo, de la Iglesia, Maíllo – become the main campaign hook, and whether the 2028 titles start building awareness now with casting announcements rather than leaving all spending to release year.
