The producer behind some of Netflix’s biggest scripted swings is changing homes. Shawn Levy, executive producer of Stranger Things, has signed an overall TV deal with Disney’s 20th Television, beginning in October 2027. The move takes him off Netflix’s roster after a run that dates back to 2017.
Under the new arrangement, Levy will develop and produce television projects for Disney platforms through his 21 Laps Entertainment banner. For Disney, the pact attaches a creator with proven franchise instincts and a history of turning IP into global viewing events.
A talent market in motion
Levy’s exit adds to a growing pattern. Earlier this year, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer left Netflix for an overall deal at Paramount Skydance. The back-to-back departures suggest the market for proven streaming showrunners is tightening, even as platforms keep their slates lean.
For media planners and entertainment marketers, these deals are early signals. An overall pact does not guarantee a hit, but it concentrates high-value development with one buyer, which can shape where subscription and ad-supported inventory becomes attractive later.
In addition to Stranger Things, Levy executive produced Shadow and Bone, All the Light We Cannot See and The Perfect Couple for Netflix. That run made him a signature figure in Netflix’s scripted strategy, so his departure is more than a roster change.
Overall deals are effectively long-term bets on a producer’s pipeline. They give a platform first access across multiple projects, but the payoff only arrives when a commissioned title breaks through. That makes the identity of the producer as important as the projects themselves.
Why Disney is a natural landing spot
Levy already knows Disney’s system. He directed the upcoming Star Wars film Starfighter and Deadpool & Wolverine, and he directed for Disney Channel earlier in his career. He has also worked with Dana Walden, Disney’s president and chief content officer, during her time at Fox.
Shawn has a rare ability to tell stories that are wildly entertaining and deeply human, something he’s brought to Disney across two decades.
Walden said in the announcement. Levy credited Disney’s storytelling ethos and his history with Walden, calling her “a force of nature as an executive.” The relationship factor matters in these negotiations.
What to watch next
The pact begins in October 2027, so its slate impact is years away. The strategic takeaway is immediate:
- Proven showrunners are being re-recruited across major platforms.
- Disney is pairing franchise directors with its television pipeline.
- Netflix is losing marquee names, not just shows, as deals expire.
For advertisers and buyers, the question is whether talent-led slates produce more predictable hits. If they do, early visibility into these pacts becomes a planning advantage.
