US media group Narrative Capital Partners has acquired UK factual distributor 3DD, and the two companies are bringing a combined slate to Mipcom in Cannes this month.
With the deal, 3DD moves from being a factual specialist into a wider catalogue play. It keeps its factual production and sales focus while adding Narrative’s feature film catalogue to the offering it takes to international buyers.
What 3DD is taking to Mipcom
3DD is launching six new factual titles at Mipcom and presenting a back catalogue of more than 700 hours. The new slate includes:
- Homicide Holmes (6×45’)
- Fault Line: The Age of Disaster (8×45’)
- Murder Maps: Femme Fatale (6×45’)
- Myths & Legends (6×45’)
- Stalin’s Spy Network (3×45’)
- Murder Maps: The Haunted (6×45’)
Alongside those launches, 3DD will introduce buyers to Narrative’s feature film offering. The highlights include the summer release Waterpark Shark and the Christmas titles A Snowbound Christmas, Christmas on Camera and A Christmas Party, along with libraries from CMG, Wolfe Video, Persimmon, Chroma and Treasury.
Why the structure matters
For media planners and entertainment marketers, this is a signal that factual programming no longer has to stand alone in a distributor’s catalogue. A factual slate can be bundled with holiday films and genre libraries to give buyers a one-stop content package. That changes how a midsize distributor can pitch volume, genre range and seasonal slots at a market like Mipcom.
3DD’s head of sales and coproduction, Patricia Hickey, called the acquisition “a big moment for 3DD” and noted the investment comes “at a challenging time for independent producers.” The implication is that consolidation is being used as a survival and expansion tool, not just a cost play.
Narrative CEO Daniel Levin said 3DD is “a great cultural fit,” pointing to its international relationships, producers and appetite to do more.
What to watch
The first test of the combined entity is Mipcom itself. Buyer reaction to the six factual launches, plus demand for the feature film library, will show whether a factual distributor can cross-sell holiday films and documentary strands in the same conversation. For sales teams elsewhere, the playbook is straightforward: after an acquisition, package the combined catalogue as a single market-ready slate rather than pitching each unit separately.
