2 billion-minute hit gets Season 3 before Season 2 airs

Netflix has renewed The Hunting Wives for an eight-episode third season, confirming the pickup more than a month before Season 2 premieres on November 26. The early order turns a single-season breakout into a planned franchise.

The numbers behind the pickup

The drama, produced by Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment, debuted in July 2025 as an adaptation of May Cobb’s novel. Its first U.S. run gave Netflix a reason to move early:

  • 811 million minutes viewed in its opening week.
  • 2 billion minutes by the second week, making it the most-streamed series in the U.S. at that point.
  • 47 consecutive days in Netflix’s Top 10.

That 47-day streak is the more important signal. It suggests finishing and repeat viewing, not just curiosity sampling, and it tells Netflix the series can hold subscribers between bigger releases.

Why an early Season 3 matters

For media planners and streaming buyers, the pickup is a data point. Netflix is not waiting to see how Season 2 performs before underwriting Season 3. It is signaling that the title has franchise economics: enough audience, enough story, and enough platform value to commit to two additional cycles.

An early renewal also makes the property easier to plan against. Advertisers and brand partners can treat it as returning inventory rather than a one-off spike, and the shorter perceived gap between seasons keeps fan attention warm.

Showrunner Rebecca Cutter framed the bet in audience terms, saying, “Buckle up, because Season 3 will be even more scandalous and twisted.”

The incentives wrinkle

While the plot stays in Maple Brooks, the production is leaving North Carolina, where the first two seasons were filmed. Producer Joan Cunningham tied the move to state filming incentives: “Without the funds, the show will not be able to continue shooting in North Carolina.” The same logic previously pushed Netflix’s Outer Banks out of the state.

For industry watchers, that is a reminder that where a series shoots is often a budgeting decision before it is a creative one.

What comes next

Season 2 arrives November 26, and the story has already moved beyond Cobb’s book. The official logline asks whether Sophie and Margo are “the hunters or the hunted,” and the early renewal hints that the season may end with a cliffhanger rather than a clean close.

Netflix has not confirmed filming dates; What’s on Netflix expects production to run from November 30, 2027 to April 1, 2027. Treat those dates as estimates, not announcements.

For Netflix, the move keeps fan attention warm between cycles. For competitors and buyers, it is a signal to treat The Hunting Wives as durable inventory, not a one-off hit.
