Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are moving Artists Equity further into independent film. The production company has launched Artists Equity Independent Pictures, a banner dedicated to funding and producing indie features with emerging filmmakers.
How the indie arm is set up
Jennifer Westin, senior VP of creative affairs and production, will run the AEIP slate day to day under Amy Baer, Artists Equity’s president of film and television. The new arm is backed by an independent theatrical film fund, making it a theatrical-first play rather than a streaming-only pipeline.
Two early projects have been announced. A Woman in the Sun is the directorial debut of Julia Cox, the screenwriter behind Nyad, and will star Renée Zellweger, Sissy Spacek and Mia Threapleton. Downriver comes from director Sam Jones and writer Carl Hiaasen, produced with Hungry Bull Productions’ Joseph Restaino and Groundswell Productions’ Michael London.
Why it matters
Artists Equity has so far been defined by star-led vehicles such as Air, The Instigators and the upcoming Netflix thriller Animals, which Affleck directs and stars in and launches Oct. 9. An indie banner changes the portfolio. It lets Artists Equity place smaller, director-driven bets while its A-list films carry the bigger commercial risk.
In a statement, Affleck and Damon pointed to their own path: “We owe much of our careers to independent cinema,” they said, adding that the label is a way to “empower rising voices” and reach audiences who want high-quality independent films.
That matters for the wider market. Independent theatrical film is becoming a sharper segment for talent discovery and prestige programming. For media planners and entertainment marketers, an Artists Equity-backed indie slate is an early signal: the filmmakers and casts in this pipeline often surface later in awards conversations and high-value acquisition campaigns.
What to watch
- Leadership: Jennifer Westin runs the AEIP slate with oversight from Amy Baer.
- Financing: A dedicated independent theatrical film fund, not a one-off project deal.
- Initial slate: Julia Cox’s A Woman in the Sun and Sam Jones and Carl Hiaasen’s Downriver.
- Adjacent pipeline: Animals hits Netflix Oct. 9, with Steven Yeun, Kerry Washington and Gillian Anderson also in the cast.
The frame: a talent pipeline, not a side project
Artists Equity launched in 2022 with Affleck, Damon and RedBird Capital’s Gerry Cardinale, and its broader slate already includes Small Things Like These, The Accountant 2 and Unstoppable. AEIP gives the company a lower-cost entry point for first-time directors and writers, while the main banner continues to shoulder larger, star-driven bets. For buyers, streamers and brands, the slate becomes an early indicator of which indie names are likely to move up to bigger budgets.
The practical read: don’t treat AEIP as a niche side project. Track its theatrical runs as proof points, and watch which first-time directors carry audience attention before their next budgets climb.
