USA Network has locked Friday, October 16 as the Season 2 premiere date for The Rainmaker, the legal drama drawn from John Grisham’s novel, and released a full trailer alongside the announcement.
The scheduling news matters less for the show than for what it says about the state of linear cable scripted programming. In 2025, The Rainmaker became USA Network’s most-watched freshman series in seven years and closed out the year as the highest-rated new scripted series across all of cable. In a window when most general-entertainment cable channels have been quietly retreating from originals, that is a meaningful data point.
Why a cable renewal is now a strategy story
For the better part of a decade, the standard playbook has been to migrate scripted development to the streaming side of the house and fill cable with acquired reruns, live sport and unscripted. The Rainmaker cuts against that. A recognisable IP engine (Grisham), a procedural spine that rewards weekly viewing, and a Friday slot — historically a low-competition night — produced the kind of relative outperformance that justifies a second season.
The takeaway for planners and programmers is not that cable is back. It is that cable can still win a category when the category has been abandoned. Being the top-rated new scripted show on cable in 2025 is a smaller pond than it was in 2015, but the reach a network buys for that price has not fallen at the same rate as its cost.
The IP-plus-procedural formula
Season 2 brings back Milo Callaghan as underdog lawyer Rudy Baylor, with Lana Parrilla as his boss Jocelyn “Bruiser” Stone and P.J. Byrne as paralegal Deck Shifflet. Also returning: Madison Iseman, Merle Dandridge, Richard Kind, Austin Nichols, John Slattery and Karen Bryson. New additions include Asher De Land, Libby Kay, Kevin Ryan and Tim Murphy.
The season’s central case involves hundreds of children, while Rudy squares off in court against former law school flame Sarah Plankmore (Iseman), sent in by her enigmatic new boss Amanda Vonn (Dandridge), whose agenda points toward an international conspiracy. A separate thread follows Bruiser’s ex-husband Tom Cassady (Nichols), whose legal trouble endangers him and the star pitcher of the minor league team he coaches.
Showrunner and executive producer Michael Seitzman told Deadline that the new season opens with Rudy’s big Season 1 win under appeal and Rudy “suddenly famous,” fielding pleas from “every lost cause in the state.” He framed the arc as Rudy “reminding himself who he really is.”
That structure — a season-long mystery layered over self-contained legal conflict — is the format most durable across both linear and on-demand consumption. It gives a network weekly appointment tune-in and gives a streamer a bingeable season shelf later.
What to watch when Season 2 lands
- Retention versus Season 1 averages. Freshman outperformance is easier than sophomore retention; the delta will tell you whether the audience was IP-curious or genuinely hooked.
- Friday-night hold. A soft-competition night inflates share. Watch the absolute demo delivery, not just the ranking.
- Delayed viewing mix. Legal procedurals over-index on time-shifted and on-demand viewing; live+same-day will understate the show.
- Downstream streaming placement. Lionsgate Television and Blumhouse Atomic Monster produce; where the library lands shapes the long-tail economics more than the premiere rating does.
The Indian read-across
Indian broadcasters face the mirror-image question: how much scripted risk to keep on linear GECs versus routing it to OTT. The Rainmaker is a useful case for the argument that a well-known literary or franchise property, paired with a repeatable episodic format, can still carry a linear slot profitably — provided the network is honest about the size of the win it is buying.
