Lifetime is converting its most-watched original movie of 2026 into a franchise. Tami Roman will executive produce and star in Double Double Trouble 2, a sequel slated for 2027. She reprises her twin roles, Drea and Ali, opposite Roger Cross, who plays a new character.
The numbers behind the green light
The original premiered February 21 and drew 625K adults 25+ in Live+Same Day viewing, 54% above Lifetime’s fiscal-year 2026 original-movie premiere average. Among women 25-64, it delivered 235K viewers and ran 90% ahead of the network’s average. That made it Lifetime’s No. 1 original movie of 2026.
Live+Same Day counts viewing that happens the same day a programme airs, before delayed viewing is added. In this case, it is the number Lifetime used to judge the film’s launch.
What the sequel is about
The first film followed Drea, reeling after a miscarriage and a divorce, battling her twin sister Ali after Ali finds love with Ryan. In the sequel, Drea has chosen to assume Ali’s identity and gets the life she wanted – the cooking show, the fiancé, the wedding invitations – until a hospital call reveals Ali is not dead. Cross plays Randy, a long-lost twin brother who slides into Ryan’s identity. The sisters end up face to face again.
Why buyers should care
The announcement signals that Lifetime is doubling down on a title that over-indexed with the audience advertisers want: adults 25+ and, more sharply, women 25-64. Rather than taking a chance on an untested original, the network is re-upping a known property and locking its star in as an executive producer.
That is the basic cable playbook applied to a movie franchise. A known star, a returning title and a built-in audience lower the risk of a premiere; the EP credit gives Roman a longer-term stake beyond acting.
- Original ranked No. 1 among Lifetime original movies in 2026.
- Adults 25+ beat the FY26 movie-premiere average by 54%.
- Women 25-64 beat the average by 90%.
- Sequel premieres in 2027 with Roman as star and EP.
What to do about it
For planners, the takeaway is not the plot; it is the benchmark. When a title beats a network’s average by half among adults 25+ and nearly double among women 25-64, it is worth flagging for 2027 scatter and sponsorship conversations. The sequel gives you lead time to compare Lifetime originals against that bar instead of buying the network average blindly.
If you already buy Lifetime originals, this is an early sign the network will put promotion behind a sequel rather than a new pitch. Buyers who track demo over-indexing can apply the same logic to prioritise future slates.
The production
Navid Soofi produces for Novus Pictures in association with Studio TF1 America. Timothy O. Johnson, Meghan Hooper White, Abbey Sibucao-MacDonald, Jill Ramsey and Roman executive produce. James Bamford directs from a script by Sa’Rah L. Jones.
