Nivola and Parker lead Yamazaki’s Grandgear at Sony

Yamazaki's first studio film lands Nivola, Parker

Takashi Yamazaki’s first major studio film is moving from package to cast. Deadline reported that Sam Nivola and Nico Parker are attached to Grandgear, with Paul Giamatti in talks for the Sony Pictures and Bad Robot production. The plot is being kept under wraps, and production is expected to start in 2027.

The package

Yamazaki will direct from his own original screenplay. J.J. Abrams and Glen Zipper are producing through Bad Robot. According to Deadline, the search for the two lead roles went through a lengthy casting process before a round of chemistry tests landed on Nivola and Parker — a sign the studio is treating the central pairing as the film’s core asset.

The talent brings different kinds of heat:

  • Sam Nivola arrives with ensemble award attention from The White Lotus, upcoming Hulu series Phony and credits including White Noise and Maestro.
  • Nico Parker won Sundance’s Breakthrough Performance award for Suncoast, earned a BAFTA supporting actress nomination for The Last of Us and has the female lead in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon.
  • Paul Giamatti, if his deal closes, brings awards-season momentum from A24’s The Debut.

Why the director is the real signal

Yamazaki is not a new name to global audiences. He wrote, directed and led the visual effects work on Godzilla Minus One and became the first director since Stanley Kubrick to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. His follow-up, Godzilla Minus Zero, recently premiered at the New York Film Festival to wide acclaim. That gives Sony a filmmaker with proven technical craft and global spectacle credentials before a single Grandgear frame has been shown.

For a studio, this is a director-led bet. Instead of buying a package around a single star, Sony and Bad Robot are using Yamazaki as the pre-sold asset and surrounding him with younger actors whose value is rising. It is the kind of package that makes sense in a market where established filmmakers are increasingly the recognisable brand.

What to watch between now and 2027

For entertainment marketers and slate trackers, three early indicators matter:

  • Godzilla Minus Zero’s opening. The sequel bows next month; its global number will either expand or temper expectations for Yamazaki’s first studio original.
  • Whether Giamatti closes. An in-demand actor in talks can change the project’s awards profile and its budget posture.
  • Positioning. Sony has not revealed whether Grandgear is being framed as spectacle, awards play or a hybrid. The marketing line will tell you how wide the studio hopes to go.

If you manage talent or media strategy around studio slates, log this as a director-driven original package rather than a star vehicle. The early signal is that Sony is betting on Yamazaki’s craft and two rising streamer-native leads, with a possible prestige anchor in Giamatti.
