Wicker tops U.K.-Ireland box office with £1.76M

The U.K. and Ireland box office delivered a photo finish at the top this weekend. Black Bear’s period comedy Wicker opened at No.1 with £1.76 million ($2.34 million), but A24’s psychological thriller Primetime finished just £10,141 behind at £1.75 million ($2.33 million).

That is effectively a tie between two adult-skewing titles. Wicker, directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, stars Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgård, Peter Dinklage and Elizabeth Debicki. Primetime, directed by Lance Oppenheim, brings Robert Pattinson, Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo and Phoebe Bridgers. A No.1 flag may help marketing, but the gap says neither title broke away.

Why the near-tie matters

For media planners and entertainment marketers, the rank is only half the story. A No.1 debut under £2 million is a moderate opening in this market, not a breakout. When two comparable films open within £10,141 of each other, it is safer to read them as splitting the same adult audience than as one beating the other.

The holdovers supplied the weekend’s depth. Here is the complete top ten, with this frame’s gross and cumulative totals where reported:

  • Wicker — £1.76M debut
  • Primetime — £1.75M debut
  • Ghosts: The Possession of Button House — $2M, $8.45M cume
  • Clayface — $1.6M, $6.2M cume
  • Wildwood — $863,082, $3.7M cume
  • Forgotten Island — $829,708, $6.8M cume
  • Street Fighter — $637,615, $7.6M cume
  • Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom — $376,460, $7.6M cume
  • Verity — $353,635, $15.5M cume
  • Other Mommy — $344,882, $7.1M cume

For buyers, the spread between Verity at $15.5 million and Other Mommy at $7.1 million shows how much longer play can matter: a title that holds screens for five weeks has already compounded value beyond the opening weekend. That is the metric to watch when comparing campaigns.

Outside the top ten, Mubi’s specialty drama Fatherland held in the top 15 with $143,327, taking its cume to $808,453. It overtook Ida to become director Paweł Pawlikowski’s second highest-grossing U.K.-Ireland release, behind only Cold War.

The next frame gets crowded

The current chart leaders will not have the market to themselves. Midweek releases include Disney drama Wild Horse Nine on Wednesday and a 20th-anniversary restoration of V for Vendetta on Thursday. Friday’s wide openings across 300+ locations include Peter Farrelly’s I Play Rocky, Universal’s George Michael: The Faith Tour in Imax and 2D, and Signature Entertainment’s festive comedy Merry Christmas Aubrey Flint.

The titles to watch for this audience are Sony’s animated mythological adventure Ramayana: Rise of a Legend, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Yash, and Anime Ltd.’s Godzilla Minus Zero, directed by Takashi Yamazaki. Both come with built-in fan bases that can drive opening-day energy even if they do not immediately top the overall chart. A 50th-anniversary 4K restoration of Rocky adds another repertory option.

The operational read is straightforward: No.1 is a headline, but margin, hold and the next weekend’s slate determine whether a film has commercial legs.
