Two Hindi films that arrived on September 18 have ended their opening weekend with a clear box-office hierarchy. Early numbers from Sacnilk, cited by ETV Bharat, put Kunal Kemmu’s action-comedy Vibe at Rs 6.77 crore in India net collection after three days. Meghna Gulzar’s crime thriller Daayra, led by Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran, stands at Rs 3.92 crore.
Day-wise trajectory
Both films improved from Friday to Saturday and eased on Sunday, but the pattern is not identical.
- Vibe: Rs 1.70 crore Friday, Rs 2.75 crore Saturday, Rs 2.32 crore Sunday — Rs 6.77 crore net.
- Daayra: Rs 1 crore Friday, Rs 1.75 crore Saturday, Rs 1.17 crore Sunday — Rs 3.92 crore net.
Vibe’s India gross is Rs 8.08 crore against Rs 4.68 crore for Daayra. Sunday figures are yet to be finalised.
Why the Sunday drop matters
Based on the early figures, Vibe’s Sunday was about 16 percent below its Saturday. Daayra’s Sunday decline was sharper at roughly 33 percent. That leaves Vibe with a lead of about Rs 2.85 crore in net collections.
A Sunday dip is normal, but the first Monday is a cleaner signal of word-of-mouth. Vibe appears to have reached a broader casual audience, while Daayra’s curve points to more limited sampling after the initial release. For media planners, the Sunday-to-Monday hold will show whether the gap is structural or simply an opening-weekend artifact.
Two different commercial propositions
The clash is also a test of product positioning. Vibe is a star-led action-comedy written, directed and headlined by Kunal Kemmu, with Sparsh Shrivastava and Preity Zinta in key roles. Its plot brings together a recently out-of-rehab slacker and a software developer in an adventure built on friendship and survival. Daayra is a true-events-inspired crime thriller about two senior police officers on opposing sides of a controversial case, exploring the tension between legal procedure and vigilante action. Early critical signals have been warmer for Daayra, but that has not yet translated into a larger commercial turnout.
The mid-level theatrical test
Neither film is operating at blockbuster scale, so this matchup is a useful gauge for mid-tier Hindi theatrical releases. A healthier Vibe run would need to carry some Saturday momentum into the weekdays; Daayra would need a stronger multiplier after its steeper Sunday fall. The next four days will reveal whether Vibe’s Rs 2.85 crore lead widens or narrows. For now, the opening weekend gives the action-comedy the upper hand, but the first Monday will decide whether the story holds.
