Scripps cuts 431 roles, adds 100 AI-era jobs

Scripps is cutting deeper into its local broadcast workforce, eliminating 431 positions while creating more than 100 new roles in a single reset announced Tuesday.

The role swap underneath the cuts

In a memo to staff, president and CEO Adam Symson framed the move as an “enterprise-wide transformation.” The new positions centre on local reporting and community connection roles, with Scripps aiming to produce more field reporting and expand local journalism across broadcast, streaming and digital platforms.

The company also said it hopes to fill as many of the 100-plus new jobs as possible with colleagues affected by the layoffs.

Second deep cut in three months

Tuesday’s announcement lands just under three months after Scripps cut 12% of its workforce as part of an overhaul into what it described as an “AI-powered broadcast journalism company.” In its second-quarter earnings call, the company said it had eliminated 432 positions and 126 open roles since the start of the year.

Symson said the majority of the significant restructuring needed for Scripps’ future operating model has now taken place, especially in local newsrooms, but smaller cuts are still expected.

What the pivot means for ad buyers

For media planners, a headcount number is a proxy for a bigger commercial shift: Scripps is rebuilding local newsrooms around multiplatform output and centralised workflows. The risk is not just fewer journalists; it is whether local stations keep enough distinctive coverage to hold linear and streaming audiences through the transition.

That makes the new community connection roles strategically important. Scripps is signalling that local journalism will be distributed across more surfaces, which changes how local inventory is packaged. A buyer should not simply renew a legacy local news schedule; the audience may move across the station’s streaming app, its digital properties and the linear channel in ways a single rating point does not capture.

  • Track audience delivery in Scripps markets affected by newsroom changes.
  • Request refreshed reach estimates on existing local station buys.
  • Test streaming and digital inventory as those formats become the growth pitch.

The coming year

Scripps now says its focus turns to growing audiences across local stations and national networks and building new company revenue streams. For buyers, the next conversations are likely to be about multiplatform audience guarantees and new local digital formats, not legacy linear-only assumptions.
