Ramayana lifetime pegged up to ₹3,000 cr

Ramayana opens in theatres today, and the trade is treating it less like a normal event film and more like a cultural test. Exhibitors and multiplex chains are projecting a lifetime of ₹1,000 crore to ₹3,000 crore, with an opening day of ₹75-100 crore gross across languages. The wide band is not a hedge. It reflects a simple reality: faith-led demand is hard to model.

Faith is the forecast model

Director Nitesh Tiwari’s adaptation stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, with music by AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer and VFX by DNEG. But the commercial argument is sentiment. Vishek Chauhan, a Bihar-based exhibitor, told PTI the film is "review- and critic-proof" because it is faith-based cinema. If the religious audience connects, he sees potential of ₹2,500-3,000 crore. If not, the run could be short. Jaipur exhibitor Raj Bansal said the film could clear ₹3,000 crore, noting that Diwali itself is tied to Lord Rama.

Advance demand is real, but so is the weekend risk

Cinépolis India had sold over one lakh tickets before release and planned more than 1,600 shows on opening day. Miraj Entertainment is programming 960 daily shows across 225 screens in Hindi, Kannada, Telugu and Tamil. Ashish Misra of Cinépolis cautioned that Dhanteras, Choti Diwali and Diwali can dent evening collections until Sunday. The real trend, he said, will appear on Monday.

Pricing is deliberately split. IMAX tickets are around ₹3,000, while average seats start near ₹200, said exhibitor Akshaye Rathi. Miraj’s Sameer Munshi confirmed there is no blanket price hike, keeping Tier-2 and Tier-3 rates family-friendly.

South is measured, not euphoric

Chennai trade expert Ramesh Bala pegs the South market at a moderate ₹30-40 crore. Yash gives Karnataka a lift and Sai Pallavi adds regional appeal, but he said a mythological film does not match the buzz of a mass action entertainer. The film also opens a day before Suriya’s Scene and Nayanthara’s Mookuthi Amman 2, so South screens will be shared quickly.

What to watch next

  • Monday hold: the true signal after three days of festive puja.
  • South contribution: ₹30-40 crore would keep the total reliant on Hindi and Tier-2/3 markets.
  • Repeat viewing: to reach the ₹2,500-3,000 crore ceiling, devotees must return, not just show up once.
