Prahaar crosses ₹9 crore in opening weekend

Rajkummar Rao’s biographical courtroom drama Prahaar: The Ujjwal Nikam Story closed its first weekend with ₹9 crore in India net collections, per Sacnilk data cited by Hindustan Times. The opening day was one of the lower starts in the actor’s career, but the film still finished ahead of two recent titles.

The weekend curve

The film opened on Friday, October 16, at ₹2.35 crore, with occupancy — the share of available seats actually sold — at 13%. Saturday improved 34% to ₹3.15 crore with occupancy at 17%. Sunday added ₹3.50 crore, continuing the same pace rather than accelerating sharply.

  • Friday: ₹2.35 crore, 13% occupancy
  • Saturday: ₹3.15 crore, 17% occupancy
  • Sunday: ₹3.50 crore
  • Opening weekend: ₹9 crore

The Friday-to-Sunday multiple works out to roughly 3.83 times the opening day. That is steady growth, not a breakout curve.

Benchmarks it has already crossed

For buyers comparing titles, the more useful comparison is velocity. Prahaar passed the full first three-day total of Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga — around ₹5.5 crore — within its first two days. It has also moved past the ₹7.04 crore lifetime India net collection of Kangana Ranaut’s Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata.

These comparisons cut both ways. One is an opening-weekend benchmark; the other is a lower lifetime bar. The stronger signal is the two-day pace against Main Vaapas Aaunga, because it shows demand extending past opening-day curiosity.

The same-day competitor is ahead

The film is not leading its own release date. Yami Gautam’s Nayyi Navelli, which opened the same day, crossed ₹10 crore in the same window and remained ahead. In exhibition terms, that is the number exhibitors will weigh first when deciding how many shows to retain for the working week.

What this signals for the screen trade

A ₹9 crore opening from 13–17% occupancy points to a modest, urban-focused audience rather than a wide theatrical groundswell. The headline total is not the same as a hit. The practical indicators to track next are weekday holds, the Monday drop, and whether single screens and multiplexes retain shows. The film’s ability to hold its screen base will decide whether the ₹9 crore becomes a foundation or a ceiling.

The run also sets an early benchmark for Rajkummar Rao’s next biopic, Dada: The Sourav Ganguly Story. A restrained but steady result here suggests the actor can open a niche drama; it does not yet prove he can pull a mass audience alone.
