Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar improved on its second day, adding Rs 65 lakh nett at the Indian box office. That is a 30% jump over Day 1, but the two-day cume of Rs 1.15 crore makes the opening weekend trajectory clear: the film is heading toward roughly Rs 2 crore.
For Luv Films’ newcomer-led romantic drama, the real issue is not the daily rise but the base. A 30% second-day bounce after a soft start does not change the scale of the opening.
The base matters more than the bounce
A daily growth number looks impressive only in context. Because the film has no known star faces, its opening was always expected to be small. The weekend number is the first hard signal for exhibitors deciding whether to hold or trim shows. Tracking at around Rs 2 crore gives distributors little negotiating power for the second week.
The genre comparison makes the underperformance sharper. Pyaar Ka Punchnama, the Luv Ranjan relationship comedy that occupies the same audience space, collected over Rs 3.25 crore in its opening weekend in 2011. In nominal terms, that is already ahead of Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar’s projected weekend; adjusting for more than a decade of ticket-price inflation, the gap is wider.
What the first weekend tells the trade
- Face value: Newcomers offer no built-in draw, so opening-day footfalls are lower from the start.
- Promotion: A stronger campaign and positive word-of-mouth could have helped slightly, but the early trend was not rescued.
- Relative position: The film is doing somewhat better than Tum Mere Ho and other small weekend releases, but that is a narrow consolation.
For media planners, the operative rule is to benchmark openings against comparable titles rather than reading daily growth in isolation. A 30% jump can still mean a sub-scale weekend when the base is low.
What happens next depends on the weekday hold. If word-of-mouth does not lift occupancy after the weekend, the theatrical run is likely to stay a small, low-recovery release.
All figures here are nett domestic collections and the weekend number is a projection, not a final cume. The direction, for now, points to a weak opening weekend.
