David Ellison has picked the name for the merged Paramount-Warner Bros. company: Skydance.
The announcement came Friday morning in a post from Ellison, who framed the name as a way to give the combined company its own identity while protecting the studio brands underneath it.
“Together, we are Skydance: a creative-first home for bold, quality storytelling.”
Ellison said the choice was deliberate. He does not want a new corporate identity to “diminish, alter or overshadow” either Paramount or Warner Bros. Instead, the Skydance name sits one level up, while DC, HBO Max, Nickelodeon, CBS, Paramount+ and CNN remain visible consumer brands.
A parent name that steps back
The naming logic is closer to a holding-company label than a consumer-facing rebrand. Ellison said the studios have distinct identities and legacies, and he wanted a name that would let them “remain in the spotlight.”
That matters because the combined company carries some of the most recognizable entertainment brands in the U.S. and global markets. The announcement video highlighted DC, HBO Max, Nickelodeon, CBS, Paramount+ and CNN as part of the Skydance umbrella.
For partners and advertisers, the distinction is practical. A corporate rename that sits above the consumer brands reduces the risk of confusing audiences who already buy into HBO Max, Paramount+ or Nickelodeon. Ellison explicitly said he wanted both studios to keep their own brands in the spotlight, which suggests the Skydance name will be used for corporate and investor audiences rather than replacing marquee consumer labels.
Closing mechanics and leadership moves
The branding update lands just before the $110 billion Paramount-WBD merger closes next week. The companies settled an antitrust lawsuit with California Attorney General Rob Bonta and 11 other state attorneys general, after clearing the deal’s other domestic and international regulatory requirements.
A Friday SEC filing shows the ticker symbol changes from PSKY to SKYD starting Tuesday.
The leadership picture is already taking shape:
- HBO CEO Casey Bloys will run Paramount+ and HBO Max.
- Paramount Streaming head Cindy Holland exits Tuesday.
- Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz joins as co-CEO.
- Warner Bros. film chiefs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy are expected to depart.
Why media buyers should track this
For streaming and TV advertisers, this is not a vanity rename. The new structure puts one executive across Paramount+ and HBO Max, an early signal that streaming strategy, bundles and ad-supported offerings may become more coordinated as the deal closes.
The case for watching ad sales comes from the brand list itself. DC, HBO Max, Nickelodeon, CBS, Paramount+ and CNN span scripted entertainment, kids, news and franchise IP. For planners, that portfolio can shift how cross-platform campaigns are negotiated once the company is fully integrated.
Ellison added that the company will pursue its goals with “passion, imagination and a willingness to take smart risks,” while giving both studios room to grow.
From production company to parent brand
The Skydance name is not new. Ellison founded Skydance Productions in 2006, renamed it Skydance Media in 2020, and then the entity became Paramount Skydance Corporation after combining with Paramount Global and National Amusements last year. This week’s decision makes Skydance the umbrella for the larger Warner Bros. combination.
