Universal and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster’s Other Mommy opened to $12.6 million at 3,365 North American theaters on Friday, October 10, putting it on course for about $28 million through Sunday. The result extends a horror run that has already carried major openings from Obsession, Backrooms and Resident Evil across 2026.
The film is based on Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel Incidents Around the House. Jessica Chastain plays Ursula and the “Other Mommy,” an entity that copies her appearance and haunts the family; Jay Duplass and Arabella Olivia Clark co-star. Produced for $18 million, it made more than two-thirds of its budget on Friday alone.
Friday’s leaderboard
The top five from Friday, in order:
- Other Mommy — $12.6M (Universal)
- Verity — $4M (Amazon MGM)
- Resident Evil — $2.32M (Columbia)
- The Social Reckoning — $2.15M (new)
- The Heart of the Beast — $1.96M (Paramount)
Those small gaps below the top spot matter. Verity and Resident Evil, both holdovers, are still out-earning a high-profile new adult drama sitting just beneath them.
The Social Reckoning starts soft
Aaron Sorkin’s corporate drama The Social Reckoning landed in fourth with $2.15 million from 2,606 locations and is projected to make about $6 million by Sunday. That is a restrained start for a film arriving with serious heritage: it is a follow-up to 2010’s The Social Network, which grossed $224 million globally and won four Oscars.
“a diverting-enough, clever-enough, true-enough examination” — Guy Lodge, Variety
Mikey Madison plays Frances Haugen, Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg and Jeremy Allen White plays Jeff Horwitz, the journalist whose work helped produce The Facebook Files. The cast and pedigree have not yet translated into opening-night urgency at scale.
Holdovers hold the line
Verity took second with $4 million on Friday and is heading toward a $14.2 million weekend, pushing its domestic total to $56.6 million. Resident Evil added $2.32 million and should reach $138.37 million by Sunday, while The Heart of the Beast brought in $1.96 million and is expected to total $49.47 million.
What the split means for the business
For media planners and entertainment marketers, Friday’s board is a clean division between genre and drama. Horror is working with moderate budgets and a clear Halloween runway. Other Mommy at $12.6 million on Friday against an $18 million cost shows how efficiently a well-marketed horror title can convert awareness into ticket sales.
At the same time, an adult-skewing drama needs a stronger reason to be seen immediately. The Social Reckoning has awards-bait talent and a timely subject, but it is starting behind films that are further into their runs. The Sunday actuals will show whether word of mouth can narrow that gap or whether the genre holdovers keep the weekend.
