Netflix has picked up global rights to Jack of Spades, a gothic mystery set in the Scottish Highlands, and will open it in cinemas in fall 2027 before the film hits the service. Joel Coen directs from a screenplay he wrote with Ethan Coen, Eleanor Catton and Conor McPherson — the first time the Coen brothers have worked together behind the camera in years.
It is not the pair’s first trip to Netflix. The streamer carried The Ballad of Buster Scruggs in 2018, and that western anthology landed three Oscar nominations. Since then the brothers split duties: Joel made The Tragedy of Macbeth for Apple with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, while Ethan directed Drive-Away Dolls and Honey Don’t!
The theatrical-first signal
For ScreenStat readers, the headline is not the cast — it is the window. Netflix has committed to a fall 2027 theatrical release before the streaming premiere. That flips the usual day-and-date assumption and puts cinemas at the front of the funnel.
Theatrical is being used here as an attention and awards engine: a concentrated run that can generate press, reviews and audience data before the title joins a crowded library. It also gives the film a second marketing beat when it finally drops on Netflix, extending its effective life beyond a single release weekend.
Talent and precedent
The package is designed to travel. Josh O’Connor, Damian Lewis, Lesley Manville and Patsy Ferran anchor the film, adapted from Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 novel The Alien: A Story of Middle Age. Netflix has recent history with O’Connor via Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man and his Emmy-winning work in The Crown.
Behind the camera, Joel Coen — a four-time Oscar winner across No Country for Old Men and Fargo — reunites with cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel and composer Carter Burwell, who has worked with the brothers since Blood Simple. Producers include McDormand, Robert Graf, Steven Rales, Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin.
What the deal tells media planners
- Windows are marketing events. A theatrical run is being scheduled more than a year out, before a single frame is public.
- Long lead builds prestige. Announcing in 2026 for a fall 2027 release gives Netflix nearly a year of earned media.
- Talent compounds. O’Connor, McDormand and the Coens are repeat Netflix partners, lowering acquisition risk.
- IP is secondary here. The 1901 novel is niche; the draw is the filmmaking team, not built-in fandom.
For planners, the practical read is straightforward: if a streamer is putting a prestige title in cinemas first, treat the theatrical window as the awareness peak and the streaming drop as the conversion layer. Budget accordingly — the loudest consumer moment may come months before the title is actually on the platform.
