Emerson launches a content creation major for fall 2027

Emerson College is turning the creator economy into a formal course of study. The Boston institution will launch a bachelor of arts in content creation in fall 2027, housed in its School of Communication within the department of strategic marketing and business.

The degree sits at the intersection of production and entrepreneurship. It will draw on Emerson’s existing strengths in storytelling, production and communications while adding creator-specific work in marketing, audience development, branding and business strategy—skills that matter because independent creators operate, in effect, as owner-operators rather than staffers inside a studio.

Why a degree, now

The backdrop is a structural shift. YouTube, TikTok and Instagram continue to grow as distribution channels even as traditional film and TV production and distribution appear flat or declining. A communications school that has long supplied Hollywood is now formalising a path for students whose first screen may be a phone and whose first business may be themselves.

For media planners and entertainment marketers, this is a talent-supply signal. The next wave of creator partners may arrive with a working vocabulary of reach, retention, sponsorship and platform ethics—not just editing and charisma.

What the major covers

  • Production and storytelling fundamentals
  • Marketing, audience development and branding
  • Business strategy, digital and financial literacy
  • Content development alongside platform ethics

“Emerson has long prepared students for success in emerging creative industries with a focus on hands-on, real world application,” president Jay Bernhardt said. The new major, he added, combines “creativity, technology and entrepreneurial skills for the next generation.”

Brenna McCormick, chair of the strategic marketing and business department, framed the degree as a route from “compelling digital content” to “a successful entrepreneurial career,” with digital and financial literacy as essential ingredients.

What it means for the screen business

Expect the professionalisation of the creator pipeline to accelerate. Brands already struggle to identify creators who understand both narrative and business terms. A structured degree could make that judgement easier—though it will not replace platform-native instinct or the speed of an algorithm-savvy creator who learned by posting.

For streamers and studios, the change also widens the talent pool. As platforms lean on short-form and creator-led marketing, a graduate who can shoot, cut, measure and price a brand collaboration becomes useful inside an organisation, not only as an external partner.

Emerson’s alumni list stretches from Pamela Abdy and Daniel Kwan to Norman Lear and Jennifer Coolidge, lending the new major legacy credibility before its first class enrolls. The degree is not positioned as a substitute for on-platform experience; its real bet is that creativity and commerce are now close enough to be taught together. The safer read is that this is one more signal the creator economy is being treated as durable infrastructure, following the playbook of film, journalism and advertising schools as their industries matured.
