Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has pulled off a rare box-office hold in Kerala: the film kept the No. 1 spot for three consecutive weekends, matching a post-Covid feat achieved only by Kamal Haasan’s Vikram. By Day 17, its Kerala gross had crossed ₹76.25 crore, according to Sacnilk figures published by The Week.
For trade watchers, this isn’t an opening-weekend story. It is evidence of sustained theatrical demand in a market that usually rewards local films first.
The milestone
Trade tracker Friday Matinee places Jailer 2 in a very small club: only Vikram had previously held the No. 1 position for three successive weekends in Kerala since theatres reopened after Covid-19. The Nelson Dilipkumar directorial, produced by Sun Pictures, released on 15 October 2026 and opened strongly. The more difficult part was staying in front of audiences beyond the initial rush.
Many major Indian films have taken solid openings in Kerala. Far fewer have kept the top slot for three weekends, which requires repeat viewing, word of mouth, and enough screen retention to remain the default film in the market.
The Kerala math
- ₹75.20 crore gross in Kerala in the first 16 days.
- ₹76.25 crore gross by Day 17.
- ₹72.25 crore Baahubali 2’s Kerala lifetime, now passed by Jailer 2.
- ₹59.64 crore Vijay’s Leo, the previous highest-grossing Tamil film in Kerala, crossed within Jailer 2’s first week.
Baahubali 2’s ₹72.25 crore total had stood for nine years as the benchmark for a non-Malayalam release in Kerala. Losing that record to a Tamil sequel after less than three weeks underlines how quickly the market’s ceiling is moving.
Why the hold matters more than the opening
Kerala is an important theatre territory for Tamil cinema, particularly for star vehicles built around Rajinikanth and Vijay. Local Malayalam titles and films from other industries make holdover space competitive. A strong first day can be manufactured with screens and show count; a third-weekend hold cannot.
Jailer 2 has benefited from Rajinikanth’s established Kerala popularity, the equity of the 2023 Jailer blockbuster, and the presence of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal alongside an ensemble cast that includes Ramya Krishnan, Vidya Balan, SJ Suryah, Jackie Shroff, Shivarajkumar and Vijay Sethupathi.
What the trade should take from it
For distribution and media planning teams, the practical read is to measure holdover multiples as closely as opening-day numbers. A title that stays No. 1 for three weekends justifies retained screens, gives marketing a reason to spend into later weeks, and signals that the territory’s lifetime ceiling has been repriced upward.
The next question is whether another Tamil tentpole without Rajinikanth’s specific equity can repeat the three-weekend hold. If it can, Kerala is a structural opportunity for Tamil cinema. If it cannot, this is a star-franchise event, not a market-wide shift.
