Jailer 2 hits Rs 776.95 cr worldwide in 16 days

Sixteen days into its run, Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has opened a clear gap on the first Jailer. The Nelson Dilipkumar-directed sequel accumulated Rs 776.95 cr worldwide by Day 16, trade estimates collated by Sacnilk show. That puts it Rs 243.21 cr ahead of the original at the same point in its 2023 run.

The 16-day scorecard

Day 16 added Rs 5.50 cr net across India from 8,079 shows. The cumulative domestic net stands at Rs 435.40 cr, with India gross at Rs 509.45 cr. Overseas added Rs 3 cr on the day; the offshore total is now Rs 267.50 cr gross.

The language split shows where the film is still working hardest:

  • Tamil: Rs 3.75 cr from 3,796 shows — 68.2% of the day’s domestic collection.
  • Hindi: Rs 1 cr from 3,310 shows.
  • Telugu: Rs 55 lakh from 799 shows.
  • Kannada: Rs 20 lakh from 174 shows.

Ticket sales remained substantial: roughly 4.29 lakh admissions on Day 16, taking the estimated total to 2.93 crore since release.

The comparison that matters

At the same point, the original Jailer had earned Rs 533.74 cr worldwide. That makes the sequel’s Rs 776.95 cr a meaningful expansion, not merely a front-loaded start. The original’s Day 16 domestic net was Rs 3.40 cr, so the sequel is also holding a larger daily base even with a wider release.

The screen-count story is equally telling. On Day 16, Jailer 2‘s Tamil version ran in 3,796 shows against 1,583 for the original’s Tamil run. The collection grew from Rs 2.60 cr to Rs 3.75 cr in that language—so growth in reach is running well ahead of growth in daily revenue, which is the classic cost of a wider sequel release.

For franchise-minded studios, same-stage comparisons are more useful than opening-weekend bragging rights. They show whether a follow-up is converting a bigger audience or simply burning pre-release buzz faster.

Why the 12% dip is not a verdict

Day 16 slipped 12% from Thursday’s Rs 6.25 cr net. That is a normal weekday-to-weekday movement; the original actually grew 11.5% on its own Day 16 from a lower base. Tamil occupancy stayed at 20.69% overall, with night shows strongest at 28.38%, while Hindi was softer at 9.83%.

The practical read: marketers should track language-wise per-show yields and occupancy by time band, not just the total. The Tamil version’s combination of screens and share keeps Jailer 2 comfortably in the third week.

For release planners, the next checkpoint is week three. The second week contributed Rs 95.55 cr net, a sharp but expected cooling from the Rs 334.35 cr first-eight-day phase. If Tamil night occupancy holds above 28% and the Hindi version can lift its 9.83% overall occupancy, the run still has room. The franchise question is no longer whether the sequel will beat the original, but by how much.
