Herzog Doc Ghost Elephants Gets Home Entertainment Deal

Buffalo 8 Distribution has acquired home entertainment rights to Ghost Elephants, the documentary written, directed and narrated by Werner Herzog. The pact was negotiated at the Toronto Film Festival market and pairs Buffalo 8 with Sobey Road Entertainment for the home entertainment rollout. Release dates and platform details are still to be announced.

Buffalo 8 CEO Matthew Helderman and Sobey Road co-managing partner Terrence Battle negotiated the agreement. Financial terms were not disclosed. Nikki Stier Justice, Buffalo 8’s head of distribution, said: “Few filmmakers have shaped documentary cinema like Werner Herzog.”

The film follows conservation biologist and National Geographic Explorer Dr. Steve Boyes on a search spanning more than a decade for a rarely documented elephant population in Angola’s mist-covered highlands. Boyes is joined by National Geographic Explorer Kerllen Costa and three KhoiSan master trackers. The expedition pairs scientific inquiry with ancient ecological knowledge.

Herzog framed the project as more than a search for an animal, calling it “an exploration of dreams, of imagination – weighed against reality.”

Why it matters for screen businesses

Ghost Elephants enters the home entertainment window with a strong credibility stack. It premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, had its North American premiere at Telluride, and then screened at AFI Fest and IDFA. It picked up a special mention at Venice, the Programmers Award for Documentary Feature at the Virginia Film Festival, and a 2026 Emmy nomination for Herzog’s narration.

That sequence is a familiar documentary monetization path: festival validation, awards and nominations, then a home entertainment acquisition. For Buffalo 8, the awards profile lowers the cost of explaining the title to buyers and audiences. Herzog’s narration is itself a discoverability lever in premium factual, while National Geographic Documentary Films brings built-in trust for wildlife and conservation content.

  • Festival-to-window proof: Venice, Telluride, AFI Fest and IDFA runs give the title a curated, high-end factual positioning.
  • Awards layer: A Venice special mention, a Virginia Film Festival award, and an Emmy nomination for narration add marketing hooks.
  • Herzog brand: The director’s voice is a differentiating asset in documentary streaming.
  • NatGeo pipeline: National Geographic Documentary Films provides blue-chip factual credibility for platform buyers.

What to watch next

The deal does not yet specify whether this lands first in transactional video-on-demand, ad-supported streaming, or an SVOD license. That choice will shape how media buyers can activate the title. A TVOD window favours purchase-intent campaigns; an AVOD window pushes reach and inventory-based planning; an SVOD license ties the title to a single platform’s subscriber and retention goals.

Sobey Road’s wider slate, which includes music documentaries built around Billy Preston, Pete Townshend and the Lilith Fair festival story, points to a specialist factual pipeline that could keep feeding the home entertainment market.
