Dancing With the Stars is turning into a broadcast-TV outlier. Tuesday’s dedication night averaged 7.36 million total viewers in Nielsen live-plus-same-day figures, up 12% from the 6.59 million the previous week, according to data reported exclusively by TheWrap.
That makes the telecast the largest non-finale audience for the ABC competition in six years. You have to go back to the Season 29 premiere in 2020 to find a bigger same-day crowd outside a finale.
A Reality Show Outrating Sports and Procedurals
The number’s competitive context is sharper than the week-over-week increase. On the same Tuesday, DWTS outdrew the Knicks-76ers NBA matchup on NBC, which pulled 5.98 million viewers, and sat 17% ahead of NCIS on CBS, which brought in 6.30 million.
For media planners, that changes how the night should be read. Sports has long been the default buy for live, hard-to-skip audiences. When a legacy unscripted format beats a marquee NBA game head-to-head, it signals appointment viewing, not just a soft competitive night.
The Run Behind the Record
Dedication night wasn’t a one-week spike. The show has now posted four straight weeks of week-over-week growth. Last week’s Super Bowl night scored 6.59 million viewers, up 2% over the prior telecast, and the season opened with its most-watched premiere in six years; Night 2 held 6.44 million.
- 7.36M: dedication night live-plus-same-day total viewers
- +12%: growth over the previous week
- 5.98M and 6.30M: NBA and NCIS same-night audiences it outdrew
Emotional Stakes and a Retention Test Ahead
The episode itself gave the audience reasons to stay. There was no elimination, Tyler Cameron’s tribute to his late mother included a pregnancy and gender reveal, and Ezra Frech earned the season’s first 10 from guest judge Kym Johnson.
The next test arrives quickly. Judges teased a double elimination for the Oct. 27 Horror Movie Night, with guest judge Shirley Ballas joining the ballroom. The program airs at 8 p.m. on ABC and Disney+ and streams on Hulu the following day; it is produced by BBC Studios.
The strategic question for buyers is whether the Halloween packaging can hold a 7-million-plus audience when the format adds elimination risk. If it does, DWTS becomes a stronger linear anchor for Disney in a season when live tune-in is scarce.
