Paramount+ is already converting Dutton Ranch from a bet into a returning franchise. Kelly Reilly told the Paramount UK Upfronts in London that Season 2 will begin filming in early 2027.
The first-week numbers that sealed it
The Yellowstone spin-off reached 12.9 million viewers worldwide in its first week, Reilly said from the stage. The confirmation came with two episodes of Season 1 still to stream, meaning the platform did not need the full season to make a renewal decision.
Dutton Ranch follows Reilly’s Beth Dutton leaving the Yellowstone mothership to start over in South Texas. Annette Bening, Ed Harris and Cole Hauser also star. Reilly played Beth across five seasons of Yellowstone, which wrapped in 2024.
Reilly called the move “a risk I’m proud we took.” She added: “The response across the world, well I am surprised and grateful.”
Why the timing matters for buyers
The pitch came two and a half weeks after the $110 billion Skydance merger closed. Paramount used the London event to show advertisers a franchise that can travel, an important proof point as the combined company sells inventory across streaming and ad-supported platforms.
For media planners, a first-week global figure announced at an upfront is a retention signal, not just a ratings line. It tells buyers that the Yellowstone audience will follow a familiar character into a new series, which is cheaper than launching an untested title.
Paramount also used the event to talk up a UK advertising deal between its Channel 5 and Channel 4, and to highlight that ads have been brought in-house for Paramount+ and Pluto TV. Sports rights add another layer: Paramount+ takes over Champions League coverage in the UK and Germany next year after an auction reported to be well in excess of the current $1.3 billion deal.
The wider slate on show
- Dutton Ranch: Season 2 filming opens in early 2027 after a 12.9 million first-week debut.
- Laird: First-look images were shown for the Scottish Highlands drama starring Kenneth Branagh and Peter Sarsgaard.
- MobLand: Producer David Glasser teased that someone will challenge Tom Hardy in Season 3.
- Sports: David Beckham promoted his Champions League series as Paramount+ prepares for the UK and Germany rights change.
What to watch next
The real test for Dutton Ranch is whether its worldwide audience holds when Season 2 arrives. Early production in 2027 puts the show on a path to return after the current cycle, and the number to beat is the 12.9 million first-week audience it just posted.
Media planners can use the 12.9 million first-week number as a benchmark. When Season 2 premieres, the same audience metric will show whether the spin-off is compounding or cooling. If it holds or grows, Paramount+ has a template for more Yellowstone-adjacent titles; if it drops, the franchise play gets harder to sell.
