Cult Day 2: Rs 2.90 Cr Worldwide, Doubles Laila

Vishwak Sen’s slasher thriller Cult improved at the Indian box office on Saturday even while running in slightly fewer shows. The Telugu film collected Rs 1.15 crore net, a 21.1% rise over Friday’s Rs 95 lakh. With overseas added, the two-day worldwide gross is Rs 2.90 crore.

Those are early, approximate numbers. But for exhibitors and media planners, the directional signal matters more than the raw total: a mid-size genre film is holding and growing, not fading after opening day.

The day-two arithmetic

On Saturday, Cult played 1,211 Telugu 2D shows, down from 1,240 on Friday. India gross for the day was Rs 1.35 crore, yielding an average of Rs 9,496 per show.

  • Saturday India net: Rs 1.15 crore, up 21.1% from Friday’s Rs 95 lakh.
  • Cumulative India net: Rs 2.10 crore after two days.
  • Domestic gross: Rs 2.45 crore.
  • Overseas: Rs 20 lakh on Saturday; total overseas gross Rs 45 lakh.
  • Worldwide gross: Rs 2.90 crore after two days.

Where the audience showed up

Occupancy tells the sharper story. Overall Telugu 2D occupancy on Saturday was 24.27%. The curve is standard for a slasher thriller but useful for daypart decisions.

Night shows led with 34.73% occupancy, followed by evening at 24.55%, afternoon at 22.36% and morning at 15.09%. The late-night slot is doing the heaviest lifting; morning shows remain the weakest inventory.

A 21.1% day-two bump on a low base is still modest in absolute terms. What makes it useful is that it arrived while the show count fell, so per-show productivity improved rather than simply riding extra screens.

The Rs 9,496 per-show average is not a capacity number. It implies there is headroom if word of mouth pushes more slots toward the late-night occupancy the film is already seeing.

The comparison that matters

Against Vishwak Sen’s earlier release Laila, the day-two trend is stronger. Laila earned Rs 60 lakh net on its second day in February 2025, according to Sacnilk tracking data. Cult collected Rs 1.15 crore net at the same stage, more than double that total.

This is not about reopening the older title. It is a read on current audience acceptance. A small film that more than doubles a comparable title’s day-two number is generating better conversion, even if two days are too short to call it a breakout.

What to watch next

The real test is the Sunday hold and the Monday drop. Cult is reportedly getting good reviews, which helps word of mouth, but the title still needs a reasonable weekend close to justify additional screens. The figures may change as official studio data and international market reports are finalised.

For advertisers and marketing teams, the takeaway is to treat daypart data as a placement signal. If late-night is the strongest corridor, a small media budget around a slasher title can be weighted there instead of spread thinly across morning and afternoon slots. The box office is not yet a guarantee, but the direction is clearer than the Friday number alone suggested.
