Celebrity Traitors UK Premiere Hits 8.8M Viewers

The second season of BBC One’s “The Celebrity Traitors” opened to more than 8.8 million overnight viewers on Thursday, peaking at 9 million, according to overnight figures reported by Variety.

It took more than half of the UK TV audience in its slot and was the top programme of the evening. That is roughly 3 million more viewers than the previous celebrity launch and the most recent civilian launch, making it the biggest premiere in the UK Traitors franchise.

Those are overnight numbers only. The BBC will add iPlayer and catch-up viewing in the coming days, so the final consolidated figure should climb.

Why it matters

For a format that thrives on alliance-building and cliffhangers, the overnight result is a signal that appointment-to-view television still exists when the stakes and casting are strong. A 50% share means half of everyone watching TV in the UK at that time chose one show; that is rare in a fragmented market. Share is tougher than raw reach because it reflects how many people were watching television at all, so the show did not just win its slot; it became the default choice.

The cast itself is a scheduling argument. Richard E. Grant, Bella Ramsey, Myha’la, Maya Jama, James Acaster, Jerry Hall, James Blunt and Michael Sheen bring different audience segments to the same tentpole, and Grant’s immediate enthusiasm has already generated early buzz.

For media planners, the split between overnight and catch-up matters. Overnight data underestimates how many people actually watch; in the UK, consolidated ratings routinely add a substantial audience from iPlayer. Early overnights are a leading indicator, not the full campaign result.

The record in context

Being roughly 3 million viewers above past launches suggests the second celebrity season is expanding the franchise rather than serving only its existing base. That changes how buyers should value the property: a format that is still growing has more headroom for sponsors, schedule adjacency and second-screen campaigns.

  • 8.8M overnight, 9M peak: the show defined UK primetime.
  • 50%+ audience share: rare in a fragmented TV market.
  • 3M above past launches: signals new viewers, not just returning fans.

What’s next

The series airs Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m. BST on BBC One and iPlayer for the next month. A fifth civilian season is due early next year, and the franchise continues to travel: Alan Cumming hosts a celebrity version on Peacock in the US, with a civilian spinoff, “New Blood,” having launched in September.

If the premiere’s catch-up lift is as strong as the overnight share suggests, the UK Traitors becomes a stronger template for local versions: cast familiar names, run it as a weekly linear event, and let streaming catch-up extend the audience.

What to do about it

Do not benchmark a reality campaign against the overnight alone. Wait for consolidated or BVOD figures before setting reach or frequency assumptions. If you are buying around high-share reality formats, treat the linear audience as the first wave and catch-up as the second; both can be planned against if the data window is long enough.
