August 2026 Hits ₹1,768 Cr Box Office

India’s theatrical market posted its strongest month of 2026 in August, with films released during the month generating an estimated ₹1,768 crore in domestic gross box office, including projected future collections for titles still in cinemas. That makes August 2026 the third-biggest monthly gross on record, behind only December 2024 and December 2023.

The leading titles

Hanuman Ansh anchored the month with an estimated ₹360 crore lifetime domestic gross. Toxic and Irumudi were among the other principal contributors, while Malayalam title Bethlehem Kudumba Unit and Hindi release Awarapan 2 also placed prominently among the top performers, according to the data.

The month’s top 10 is not a one-language story. It includes three Hindi films, two Telugu films, two Malayalam films, two Tamil films and one Kannada film.

  • August 2026 domestic gross: ₹1,768 crore.
  • Hanuman Ansh lifetime domestic gross: ₹360 crore.
  • Top 10 language mix: Hindi 3, Telugu 2, Malayalam 2, Tamil 2, Kannada 1.
  • 2026 cumulative domestic box office: ₹9,868 crore, up 18% year on year.

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit and the Malayalam upside

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has reached about ₹185 crore in domestic gross, close to the lifetime total of the 2025 Malayalam hit Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra. Importantly, that figure excludes the Tamil and Telugu versions, which released in September and therefore sit outside the August chart.

Once those additional language versions are counted, the film is positioned to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time at the Indian box office across all language versions. The trajectory matters beyond one title: a Malayalam release can now extend its commercial life through dubbing and staggered regional releases rather than depending solely on its home market.

December months usually benefit from year-end releases and holidays. August’s third-place finish without that seasonal tailwind is a signal that theatrical demand is broadening, not simply peaking around the same calendar slots.

Why the language mix matters

For media planners and entertainment marketers, the August data shows cinema is still doing heavy lifting in India’s media mix. The 18% year-on-year increase in cumulative box office through August suggests theatrical remains a high-attention, big-screen environment heading into the festive season.

For distributors and studios, the top-10 split changes release strategy. A film no longer needs to be a large-scale Hindi title to generate national gross. The market is behaving like a multi-territory ecosystem, where dubbing, subtitling and staggered language releases can build incremental revenue after opening weekend.

August’s ₹1,768 crore is a benchmark rather than a ceiling. With the festive and year-end release calendar still ahead, the rest of 2026 will test whether regional cinema can keep driving the next leg of theatrical growth.
