Netflix has paired a brutal leadership week with a prestige scripted bet. The streamer has given a two-season, straight-to-series order to The Apology, a thriller drama starring Gwyneth Paltrow in her first series regular role. Deadline reports Netflix bought the competitive package preemptively from A24-based Cut To; the streamer declined comment.
Oscar winner Thomas Vinterberg, who directed Another Round, will make his U.S. television directing debut on the series. Joe Murtagh wrote the series and will serve as showrunner; he created the 2023 series The Woman in the Wall.
The plot
The Apology follows Evelyn and Caleb Amspoker, whose son was murdered 18 years ago in a cold case that gripped the nation. When a stranger confesses, justice finally looks possible, until the family learns the killer may receive a reduced sentence. The couple then decides to take matters into their own hands.
Why the order lands loudly
The pickup comes days after Netflix replaced chief content officer Bela Bajaria with Peter Rice and let go head of film Dan Lin, following layoffs of around 1,000 people and Wall Street concern about slowing engagement growth. Deadline reports head of U.S. and Canada scripted series Jinny Howe closed the order over the weekend. Sources told the trade that Rice, who starts Monday, has spoken with Howe, and was likely consulted given the size of the commitment, but was not involved in the process.
The trade also notes a full-circle moment. Netflix announced itself as an original programming player with a two-season straight-to-series order for House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey, in 2011. Fifteen years later, the same mechanics signal that scripted remains a priority during a reset.
The package behind Paltrow
For buyers, the two-season commitment is the key datapoint, not the name alone. It gives marketing teams a longer runway and lowers the early cancellation risk that makes one-off drama buys hard to plan.
Cut To, run by Hipps and based at A24, has built a reputation for packaging A-list talent. Since launching two years ago, it has landed four straight-to-series orders, according to Deadline. The list includes:
- Discretion, starring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning, at Paramount+
- Trigger Point, headlined by Joel Edgerton, at Netflix
- An espionage thriller starring Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour, from Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne, also at Netflix
Paltrow’s previous television work includes a recurring arc on Fox’s Glee; she recently starred in the feature Marty Supreme. This is her first series regular role.
