Six Brands Become the Plot in Mediacorp's Shoppable Microdrama

Mediacorp has launched Love Angels, a 20-episode microdrama that puts brand messages inside the story rather than around it. The Singapore broadcaster calls it its first “shoppertainment” drama, and it premiered on October 19 across Love 972’s Facebook, Instagram and TikTok pages, MeWatch and the Mediacorp Entertainment YouTube channel. One episode runs each weekday until November 13.

This is not just another branded series. The show is built as a content-to-commerce pipeline: six brand partners appear across eight integrated episodes, and selected Channel 8 airings carry QR codes that send viewers straight to a purchase page.

Brands are written in, not bolted on

The series is a spy comedy billed as a tribute to classic Hong Kong spy films. Three veteran operatives search for a missing colleague and uncover a conspiracy. The format gives the writers room to break the fourth wall, with characters speaking to viewers about products.

Jacqui Lim, Mediacorp’s chief commercial officer, said the integration playbook is to avoid interrupting the story. A product, she said, can be “woven into a humorous situation, a relationship, a gift between characters or even a plot twist rather than an interruption to the story”.

The numbers behind the bet

Mediacorp says its microdrama slate now exceeds 20 scripted titles since 2024, spanning languages and genres. Five of those have passed 10 million views, and the three-season On The Line franchise has generated more than 41 million views. That track record is the commercial argument for the new format: advertisers are joining a slate with proven reach on social video, not taking a punt on an untested idea.

For media planners, the logic is straightforward. Social platforms already compress discovery and purchase into a single session. A microdrama just gives that journey a narrative reason to start.

What the campaign includes

Around the series, Mediacorp has layered several commerce touchpoints:

  • A pre-launch audio drama on Love 972 to seed the story and the brands.
  • A Facebook livestream hosted by cast member Violet Fenying.
  • A TikTok livestream from The Wonder Shop for live commerce.
  • QR-coded Channel 8 episodes that connect linear TV to checkout.

Six advertisers are in the show: Tuas Power, Maxi-Cash, Haleon, Wipro Consumer Care, Hoe Kee Hardware and Sodo Feng Shui Centre. Mediacorp said they were involved from the scripting stage, so each integration serves both the narrative and the brand message.

Wawa Pictures, a Singapore indie producer, made the series. The cast is drawn from Love 972 radio personalities: Mark Lee, Dennis Chew, Marcus Chin, Violet Fenying and Chua Lee Lian.

Why this matters now

Microdrama has been Asia’s fastest-moving experimental format. The usual escalation was vertical, short and ad-supported. Mediacorp’s move pushes the format into advertiser-funded entertainment, where commerce is the point of the story rather than a commercial break around it. The signal for entertainment marketers: watch, tap and buy are collapsing into one funnel.

The watchpoint is whether six brands across eight episodes stay watchable. If Love Angels holds audience, expect more shoppable scripted slates from regional broadcasters. If it slips, the format will look like a long ad, and viewers are good at skipping those.
