Rajkummar Rao’s Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam closed its first weekend with an estimated Rs 8.5 crore nett in India, according to trade figures from Pinkvilla. The film added roughly Rs 3.5 crore on Sunday, after opening at Rs 2 crore on Friday and rising to Rs 3 crore on Saturday.
The numbers are not a crash, but they are not a launchpad either. For a visible mid-budget Hindi title, the weekend leaves little room for a weekday slide.
Weekend arithmetic
The day-by-day trend matters as much as the total:
- Friday: Rs 2 crore nett
- Saturday: Rs 3 crore nett, a 50 per cent jump
- Sunday: Rs 3.5 crore nett
- Weekend total: Rs 8.5 crore nett (estimated)
A fifty per cent Saturday jump is normally a healthy signal. But when it starts from a Rs 2 crore Friday, the absolute gain is small. Put another way, the weekend total is about 4.25 times the Friday number. That is ordinary arithmetic, not breakout behaviour. Sunday added only half a crore over Saturday, suggesting the film found a ceiling quickly.
Why the weekday matters more
Mixed word-of-mouth is the bigger risk. A courtroom drama usually depends on audience advocacy to translate weekend interest into weekday footfalls. Without sharply positive word-of-mouth, the Monday drop will likely be steep, and the opening weekend total may end up looking like a large share of the final run rather than its base.
For distributors and marketers, the Monday hold is the first genuine test of staying power. A stable Monday would suggest some audience acceptance; a hard drop would confirm that the film exhausted its core demand over the weekend.
What to watch next
The film needs better trends than the weekend alone provides. Early trade commentary is cautious, pointing to disappointing overall numbers despite weekend growth. If Monday settles well below the Sunday figure, the road to any meaningful lifetime total gets longer.
That matters beyond this one title. It is a reminder for media planners tracking film campaigns: percentage gains look good on a chart, but they must be measured against the Friday base. Momentum is relative.
