Drishyam is India’s fifth-biggest franchise at Rs 648.65 cr

The Drishyam franchise has climbed to fifth place on Bollywood Hungama’s list of highest-grossing Indian film franchises by domestic lifetime collections. The three-film series now stands at Rs. 648.65 crore, moving ahead of the five-film Housefull franchise, which has collected Rs. 646.08 crore.

The margin is thin—just Rs. 2.57 crore—but the structure behind it is the real story. Drishyam reached the milestone with three releases: Drishyam (2015, Rs. 67.13 crore), Drishyam 2 (2022, Rs. 240.54 crore) and Drishyam The Conclusion (Rs. 340.98 crore). The latest instalment alone contributed more than half of the franchise total.

Efficiency matters more than volume

Housefull has five films: Housefull (Rs. 75.62 crore), Housefull 2 (Rs. 106 crore), Housefull 3 (Rs. 109.14 crore), Housefull 4 (Rs. 194.60 crore) and Housefull 5 (Rs. 160.72 crore). Across those instalments, it has averaged roughly Rs. 129.2 crore per film. Drishyam, by contrast, averages about Rs. 216.2 crore per film. Housefull’s latest instalment collected less than Housefull 4, while Drishyam’s latest instalment is its biggest by a wide margin.

  • Drishyam average per film: approx. Rs. 216.2 crore from three releases
  • Housefull average per film: approx. Rs. 129.2 crore from five releases
  • Breakout sequel: Drishyam The Conclusion added Rs. 340.98 crore, higher than any single Housefull entry

The gap between the two averages is the figure media planners and entertainment marketers should note. Housefull built its total through consistency across five comedy releases; Drishyam built a higher total with fewer swings by increasing audience interest from the second film onward. Drishyam 2 more than tripled the original’s collection, and Drishyam The Conclusion then improved on that by roughly Rs. 100 crore.

That trajectory matters when a platform or studio is deciding whether to invest in a sequel, license a catalogue, or plan a franchise campaign. A series that grows with each instalment can command stronger terms than one whose later entries are simply holding the line.

The wider franchise chart

Drishyam now sits behind only Dhurandhar (Rs. 2,004.05 crore), Pushpa (Rs. 938.36 crore), Tiger (Rs. 823.46 crore) and Stree (Rs. 756.92 crore). It has also edged past Baahubali, which stands at Rs. 635.82 crore, according to the chart.

For studios and financiers, the ranking carries a simple lesson: franchise value is not only about how many sequels you can produce, but how efficiently each one converts into box office. A suspense-thriller series with three entries has outperformed a comedy franchise with five entries—and the title that moved the needle most is the latest release.
