The December 2026 box-office standoff between Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three and Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday has moved from fan chatter to calendar reality. Both films are dated December 18 in the US and Canada, and the fight is no longer just about who sells more tickets — it is about who controls the best screens and the earliest dates.
The date collision is now official
Warner Bros. first reserved December 18, 2026, back in June 2024 for a Villeneuve event film that became Dune: Part Three. Disney then moved Avengers: Doomsday out of May 2026 and onto the same date, creating what fans have labelled “Dunesday”.
The rollout is not identical everywhere. Avengers: Doomsday is reported to open early in several markets:
- December 16: UK, China, France, Malaysia, Singapore
- December 17: India, Australia, Mexico
- December 18: US, Canada, Japan
The franchise stakes are heavy. Dune: Part Three is positioned as the conclusion of Paul Atreides’ saga, with Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Florence Pugh among the cast. Avengers: Doomsday counters with Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal in the ensemble.
Premium screens are the real prize
The sharper edge is IMAX access. Dune: Part Three has reportedly secured exclusive IMAX screenings for its opening three weekends, which would keep Avengers: Doomsday out of the format during the crucial launch period. Warner Bros. is marketing IMAX 70mm screenings and more than an hour of expanded aspect ratio footage as the large-format draw.
Disney is responding with Infinity Vision, a certification for premium large-format cinema screens. The standard covers screen size, image brightness and sound, giving Avengers: Doomsday a premium viewing option even where IMAX is locked out.
What to watch
For exhibitors and media planners, the opening-day headline is less important than the mechanics around it. The staggered international dates shift early grosses across markets before the US frame. The IMAX dispute turns on whether Dune’s exclusive screens sell out quickly and whether Infinity Vision can hold a premium ticket price without the IMAX brand.
Those three weeks will likely show whether this becomes a contest of films or a contest of formats.
