Other Mommy's $45M Global Start Buries Social Reckoning

Two star-led films arrived in the same weekend, but their box-office results tell very different stories. Jessica Chastain’s Other Mommy opened to $27.5 million domestically, while Jeremy Strong’s Aaron Sorkin drama The Social Reckoning opened to $5.5 million. TheWrap reports that Strong marked the moment by texting Chastain a Vulture headline about the result.

The opening numbers

Other Mommy, produced on a $19 million budget, added $17.6 million from 50 overseas markets for a $45 million global start. The Social Reckoning landed at No. 5, just ahead of the third weekend of Universal/DreamWorks’ Forgotten Island, which took $4.5 million.

The texts are light, but the signal is real

Strong sent Chastain a link to a Vulture piece headlined “Other Mommy Spanks The Social Reckoning At The Box Office.” Chastain posted the exchange to her Instagram Story, replying “Omg” and “These pics are hysterical,” while Strong answered with two emojis. The interaction is a reminder that star social accounts can add a second layer of distribution to a box-office story.

Why the gap matters

For media planners and entertainment marketers, the two openings are a clean test of cost base and positioning. Other Mommy did not need a blockbuster number; it needed enough global gross to clear a low break-even point. The Social Reckoning, a prestige package built around a known director and a famous subject, opened at about one-fifth of Other Mommy’s domestic gross.

The comparison with Sorkin’s earlier Facebook film is stark: The Social Network opened to $22.6 million in fall 2010. That gap is the story for buyers: past director performance is not a floor.

What to do with it

  • Read horror openings against production cost, not against blockbuster comps.
  • Fold in overseas receipts early; the 50-market number is what makes the break-even case.
  • Do not treat a prestige director’s history as a guarantee: a director’s $22.6 million opening can still be followed by a $5.5 million opening.

The outlook

The next test is holdover behaviour. Other Mommy has global momentum and a low hurdle to clear; The Social Reckoning has to show word of mouth to improve a weak No. 5 start. If it does not, the weekend will be remembered as a low-cost horror win and a costly marketing lesson for a prestige package.
