HBO has closed one of the more intense scripted auctions of the fall, giving a straight-to-series order to The Spread, a Miami-set wealth and power drama with Javier Bardem attached to star and executive produce. The package from Ozark co-creator Bill Dubuque and Sean Sansiveri, produced by Fifth Season, also has Matthew Vaughn set to direct.
A rare straight-to-series commitment
Deadline reported that Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount+ and Apple TV all came in with offers, mixing writers rooms and straight-to-series orders. Paramount+ and Prime Video were especially aggressive; both made straight-to-series offers that HBO eventually matched.
That is notable because HBO rarely greenlights a series off a pitch. Matching the market here signals how much the network wanted the Dubuque-Bardem combination in its drama pipeline.
Fifth Season took the project out in August, a period many sellers avoid, and the move paid off. Sources told Deadline that bids escalated as the process went along, including a potential two-season pickup.

Bardem’s character is a visionary billionaire who collects brilliant, hungry and dangerous people, then aims their ambitions at the markets that power America. His larger goal is to shift the center of economic gravity to Miami.
Francesca Orsi, HBO’s head of drama, said the network has long wanted a Florida-set scripted series and is excited by what she called the gilded chaos of Miami.
Why it matters to buyers
The auction is another data point that premium drama scarcity is still driving price. Dubuque’s Ozark remains a reference title for Netflix, while Bardem has recent streaming roles in Apple TV’s Cape Fear and Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. That combination of creator track record and global star recognition can justify a series commitment before a script is fully developed.
For HBO, the show adds a Miami-set financial drama with a global star attached. For advertisers and media planners watching Max, the package signals continued investment in big-ticket original drama even as platforms tighten overall volume.
