Charter Communications is removing two senior Spectrum leaders at the end of the year, folding the commercial and marketing roles into a flatter structure as it hunts more than $1 billion in cost savings after the $34.5 billion Cox deal.
Chief Commercial Officer Adam Ray and Chief Marketing Officer Sharon Peters will depart, according to an internal email obtained by TheWrap. Ray’s role will not be filled; Simon Cassels will serve as interim CMO.
The strategic reset
Spectrum COO Nick Jeffrey framed the change as a way to cut layers and speed decisions. He named two priorities: returning to core internet growth and improving customer service.
We have a huge opportunity in front of us. I am determined that we will deliver The Great Cable Comeback.
That language matters because it acknowledges underperformance. Jeffrey wrote that Spectrum has ‘failed to marshal’ its broadband, video and mobile assets into a winning strategy in recent years.
Who’s moving
Ray spent more than 20 years at Spectrum and had been CCO since 2022. His remit covered marketing, residential sales, Spectrum Business and Community Solutions, including SpectrumOne’s $1,000 savings guarantee and Xumo Stream Box video packages. Peters joined in 2016, helped launch the Spectrum brand, introduced Life Unlimited in 2024 and led the Spectrum Mobile launch in 2018.
Under the new structure, these leaders report to Jeffrey:
- Customer Operations: Cliff Hagan
- Field Operations: Tom Monaghan
- Spectrum Consumer: Christian Ruiz
- Spectrum Business: Keith Dardis
- Business Planning and Business Intelligence: Paul Woelk
- Spectrum Wholesale: Jeff Breaux, operationally separate
Why it matters for the screen economy
Spectrum sits at the intersection of pay-TV, broadband distribution and ad-supported streaming. Its packaging choices influence how millions of US homes discover and pay for streaming bundles. The Xumo Stream Box and SpectrumOne guarantee are not simply retention tools; they are Spectrum’s answer to the streaming-first bundle.
For media planners and entertainment marketers, a leaner commercial layer may mean faster approvals on co-marketing deals, but also tighter campaign budgets while Charter extracts merger savings. Watch how Spectrum markets to former Cox customers, because that integration is the first live test of the new structure.
The immediate takeaway is operational: when a company names ‘fewer layers’ and ‘accountability’ in a reorg, partners should re-map decision rights early rather than wait for the org chart to settle.
