Maddie Hasson has joined Apple TV+’s Guilty Creatures as a series regular, a move that puts her opposite Julia Garner and Lewis Pullman in a true-crime thriller Apple is packaging as a premium title.
The production setup
Adapted by Sarah DeLappe from Mikita Brottman’s book, the series is set in the Florida panhandle and centers on a heated affair that turns into murder. The source material follows a young couple who are both adulterous and deeply religious, and traces the emotional toll of living as killers for 18 years. Garner and Pullman are expected to play the central pair, while Hasson’s role has not yet been spelled out.
Craig Gillespie directs, Stuart Zicherman is showrunner, and Tomorrow Studios produces. The project was developed through first-look deals with Garner’s Alma Margo and Gillespie’s Fortunate Jack Productions, the kind of talent infrastructure that lets a streamer hold onto sought-after creators and move faster when strong IP appears.
Executive producers include Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, and Alissa Bachner for Tomorrow Studios; Garner through Alma Margo; Zicherman; DeLappe; Gillespie and Annie Marter through Fortunate Jack; and Brottman.
Hasson’s recent run makes the casting legible as a genre-and-prestige play: she leads the survival thriller Bone Lake, was a series regular on Netflix’s The Recruit, appeared in James Wan’s Malignant, and has the Higher Ground limited series The Altruists coming up.
Why this matters for the screen business
For media planners and entertainment marketers, a single casting announcement works as an early demand signal. It confirms that the series is moving forward, shows which talent the streamer is betting on, and starts to define the audience segments that will matter when the campaign begins.
- Premium packaging: Apple is using first-look deals to attach proven creators and casts to literary true-crime IP.
- Audience hook: The blend of crime, faith and long-hidden guilt gives the title a clear true-crime positioning.
- Campaign trigger: Casting is one of the first external markers, so it is a practical cue to start watching for teaser and positioning moves.
What to watch next
The open questions are what role Hasson plays and how Apple will frame the show: as an awards contender, a broad commercial thriller, or both. With a true-crime book, a stylized director and a rising cast, Apple appears to be building an event title rather than another quiet library addition.
