Spaceship Earth Pilot Casts Laga'aia and Phillippe

Disney+ is building its next young-adult original around a piece of theme-park IP. Catherine Laga’aia and Deacon Phillippe are attached to lead the pilot for Spaceship Earth, a project inspired by the EPCOT attraction of the same name at Walt Disney World.

What the pilot is

The show comes from writer, executive producer and showrunner Jason Fuchs, who is writing with Michael Waldron. Lee Toland Krieger is attached as director and executive producer. Fuchs executive produces via Five Ten Productions, Waldron via Anomaly Pictures alongside Adam Fasullo, and Adam Fishbach via Fishbach Productions.

The official logline sets up a time-collision story. After a mission to avert an imminent global cataclysm goes wrong, a small band of teenagers from Earth’s past and future must join forces against what the project calls ‘a threat as vast and mysterious as time itself.’

Why the casting matters

Laga’aia is arriving off the title role in Disney’s 2026 live-action Moana, opposite Dwayne Johnson, after earlier appearing in The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart. Phillippe, the son of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, has appeared in Netflix’s Never Have I Ever and Prime Video’s Motörheads, and is currently filming the Netflix romcom Better Than the Movies.

  • A pilot is not a series order; the next signal is whether Disney+ commits to a full season.
  • Both leads arrive with built-in family and young-adult fan bases, which lowers launch risk for an unproven title.
  • For buyers, this is an early read on Disney+’s appetite for teen-skewing scripted originals pulled from park IP.

The pilot economics

In streaming, a pilot is a controlled test. It lets Disney+ evaluate the creative, the tone and the two leads’ chemistry without committing to a full run. That distinction matters for media planners and marketers: a cast announcement is a signal of intent, not a guarantee that a title reaches the ad-supported slate.

The packaging detail is also useful. Laga’aia and Phillippe are both repped by CAA, which points to how the project was assembled around a recognizable IP signpost and young actors already circulating in the franchise system.

ScreenStat take

Spaceship Earth has long been more of an edutainment ride about communication through time than a narrative engine. Turning it into a teen time-travel premise gives Disney+ a familiar brand name without locking the show to a single plot. The test is whether a pilot becomes a series, and whether it lands with a young audience that is increasingly platform-agnostic. Watch for a series order, an episode count and where Disney+ positions the title.
