Emmys 2026 Preliminary Ratings Fall 11.7%

Early Nielsen numbers for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards put the show at 6.7 million viewers across NBC and Peacock, according to preliminary data. That is an 11.7% decline from the 7.59 million final figure for last year’s telecast on CBS and Paramount+. Final numbers could still shift when adjusted data is released.

How the 2026 Emmys performed

The Monday-night ceremony was moved off its usual Sunday slot to avoid NBC’s Sunday Night Football. The scheduling change meant the show still had to compete with Monday Night Football, including the Chiefs-Broncos game.

Despite the year-over-year drop, the telecast improved on several comparisons that matter for the network:

  • 6.7 million total viewers across NBC and Peacock
  • Down 11.7% from the 2025 show’s final 7.59 million
  • Up 10% from NBC’s last Emmys telecast in 2022
  • Up 41% from the strike-delayed Monday show on Fox in January 2024, which drew 4.4 million

NBC also pointed to the show’s competitive position: it ranked as Monday’s No. 1 entertainment program and the most-watched Monday entertainment telecast of 2026 in both total viewers and the 18-49 demo.

Streaming and social reach

Peacock’s simulstream made this one of the stronger non-holiday entertainment specials for NBC on the platform, trailing only past Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade telecasts in reach.

On social platforms, the Emmys generated 133 million video views across Facebook, Instagram, X and YouTube, a 90% increase from last year. The show also recorded 17 million total interactions, making it the top social program of the night.

What this means for awards rights

For buyers and programmers, the preliminary drop is a reminder that live awards shows remain dependent on scheduling and sports competition. The Monday move protected NBC’s Sunday Night Football, but it also placed the Emmys against a different NFL window, limiting the upside of the show’s recent growth.

The next negotiation window could be more consequential. The broadcast-network rotation deal for the Emmys is expiring, and reports indicate the Television Academy is in advanced talks to move the ceremony to Prime Video. If that happens, the industry will be watching whether a streaming-first distribution strategy can reverse the broader erosion in linear awards ratings.
