Amazon re-pairs the Mirzapur duo

Abhishek Banerjee and Divyenndu are returning to Amazon Prime Video, but not in the world that made them streaming favourites. The two actors, known widely as Compounder and Munna Bhaiya from Mirzapur, are attached to a new drama being developed with Endemol. Amazon and the producers are describing it as an ‘Empire’-style series, a pointer to a bigger, more controlled world than a gangster thriller.

Banerjee is set to headline the show, with Divyenndu in a key role. Plot, setting, period, character details and a release window have not been disclosed.

Why the casting is the story

This is a familiar streaming move: take two performers with proven on-screen chemistry and put them in a new title. The audience association from Mirzapur becomes a discovery shortcut. For Amazon, it means the series starts with an existing fan base and a simple marketing hook. The reunion is also recent: the two appeared together in Mirzapur: The Movie, so their pairing is still active in audience memory.

If the ‘Empire’-style description holds, the show is being built around succession, family rivalry or institutional power rather than the gangster dynamics of Mirzapur. That matters because the casting carries baggage; the creative and marketing will have to separate the new characters from the old ones.

For the marketing side

The early takeaway is to treat the pairing as the first campaign asset. Actor-led creative can carry the announcement before plot details are ready. But the first look should avoid Mirzapur’s visual language if the makers want to establish a different world.

  • Lead with the known duo in trade and social creative.
  • Use world-building imagery early to signal the genre shift.
  • Give planners a release window soon so they can budget slots around the actors’ other releases.

The slate context

Both actors have full schedules. Banerjee is set for a Tamil debut in a Netflix show with R. Madhavan, Nimisha Sajayan and Gulshan Devaiah, an action drama opposite Tiger Shroff directed by Remo D’Souza, and a psychological thriller with TVF. Divyenndu has a period film before the planned Madgaon Express 2, directed by Kunal Kemmu.

Endemol’s attachment adds a production signal. Endemol has been behind several large Indian and international formats, so its involvement suggests Amazon is not treating this as a small cast-led experiment. For buyers and planners, that usually means a wider content marketing push than a mid-sized original would get.

For media planners, the practical question is not whether the show will find an audience, but how much of the Mirzapur audience converts to a different genre. A known duo lowers initial awareness cost, but it does not guarantee retention if the tone feels unfamiliar. The early creative, trailer and promotional arc will be worth tracking.
