Netflix's 2027 slate: 20 films and a strategic shift

Netflix’s 2027 original film calendar is already taking shape. An early preview from What’s on Netflix names about 20 titles to watch, and the list says as much about strategy as it does about individual films: a small group of event titles will get genuine theatrical windows before they hit the platform.

Narnia leads the theatrical shift

The clearest signal is Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. Set for cinemas on February 12 and Netflix on April 2, the fantasy adaptation will run exclusively in theaters for seven weeks—the longest window Netflix has given a film of this scale. It was once planned as a short IMAX run, so the change turns the title into a theatrical event first and a streaming release second. The source calls it the streamer’s most important movie of 2027.

Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory follows the same pattern. The Roald Dahl animated musical opens wide on November 5 and reaches Netflix on December 22, a family-friendly Christmas landing after a long theatrical run. That makes the Wonka project’s awareness cycle begin months before subscribers can press play.

IP bets and nostalgia span the year

The early preview also shows the payoff of patient rights deals. Gundam, a live-action adaptation first announced with Legendary in 2018, has wrapped production and is now in post-production. Grown Ups 3 brings back Adam Sandler’s ensemble; the earlier two films grossed more than $500 million combined at the global box office. UK comedy The Inbetweeners 3 also returns to Netflix with the original cast, and a reimagined 13 Going on 30 leans on nostalgia.

Other titles target romance and thriller audiences: Lena Dunham’s Good Sex, acquired for a reported $55 million, stars Natalie Portman, while The Last Mrs. Parrish pairs Jennifer Lopez with Robert Zemeckis. High-concept romance is also represented: Just Picture It gives Millie Bobby Brown a sci-fi meet-cute, while A Matter of Time pairs Ben Stiller with a fantasy-romance setup.

What this means for planning

For media planners, the takeaway is not just which films are coming, but which release windows to design around. Event titles have a cinema-driven runway; volume titles are still likely to work as platform-driven drops. Dates remain fluid. The preview notes that a title is not locked until a final trailer arrives or it shows up in the app’s “Worth the Wait” tab.

  • Event titles: Narnia and Wonka need theatrical-plus-streaming campaign arcs.
  • Nostalgia comedies: Grown Ups 3 and The Inbetweeners 3 can be marketed to returning audiences.
  • Genre depth: Gundam and Bad Bridgets support fandom and prestige discovery.

That mix should help Netflix cover family co-viewing, romance, comedy and franchise fandom across 2027—without relying on any single weekend.
