Toronto’s 2026 slate is an early indicator for the global film market. Variety’s annual shortlist of 20 international titles to track maps where awards committees, sales agents and streaming platforms are placing bets—and the list is intentionally weighted toward new work rather than titles that already surfaced at Cannes.
For entertainment marketers and film-business teams, that makes it a discovery tool. The titles on this list are not the only important films at TIFF, but they show where the market is looking next.
Platform is the awards lane
The clearest strategic signal is Platform. This year’s winner of the section will move directly into the Oscar international feature race, giving the lineup an outsized influence on awards-season planning.
- Angh (India): Theja Rio’s feature debut, shot on 16mm with mostly non-professional actors from Nagaland, is the only Indian film in this year’s Platform lineup.
- On Behalf of My Son (Brazil): Gabriel Martins’ Netflix Brazil-backed drama arrives with awards momentum; Brazil’s Oscar submission is due mid-September.
- Growth of the Soil (Norway): Hans Petter Molland’s adaptation is already Norway’s Oscar submission.
- Children Untold (Japan): Nishikawa Miwa opens Platform with a World War II survival story.
Variety also notes that 42% of Platform titles are directed by women. That is less a diversity data point than a pipeline signal: the section’s winner receives a direct Oscar berth, so the mix of filmmakers here shapes which international names become awards-season fixtures.
Where the money and marketing will move
Beyond the awards race, several titles arrive with concrete market mechanics already in place.
Jodie Comer’s gothic taxidermy musical Stuffed opens the Discovery program. Faith, with Erin Doherty and James McAvoy, is drawing strong early reaction. Sunburn, from Serville Poblete, has buyers circling after a first market screening. Anton Corbijn’s Talent for Murder, starring Helen Mirren as Patricia Highsmith, already has an Oct. 23 U.S. release via Bleecker Street and LD Entertainment.
John Madden’s Onwards and Sideways, a Parkinson’s romantic dramedy with Laura Linney and Rhys Ifans, has a U.K. theatrical release through Icon Film Distribution, with CAA Media Finance co-repping North America.
For streaming platforms, the clearest template is On Behalf of My Son: a local-language festival premiere, backed by Netflix, positioned as a likely national Oscar submission. That model is becoming the default playbook for streamers looking to combine subscriber value with awards prestige.
Read it like a buyer
A practical way to use the list is to separate titles into three buckets: awards traffic, commercial pre-sales, and discovery bets.
Awards traffic includes the Platform hopefuls and already-submitted titles. Commercial pre-sales include star-driven packages with release dates or sales agents attached, such as Talent for Murder and Onwards and Sideways. Discovery bets include first features and sophomore breakouts, where specialty distributors and streamers often move fastest after a strong premiere.
That distinction matters for media planners. Titles with fixed release dates create predictable campaign windows. Breakout festival titles without a buyer are the Q4 media opportunities to track before awards attention locks in.
