Kaelen Ohm’s new film The Betrayers premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 12, but the more instructive part for screen industry readers is the route she took to get there. The actor, musician and filmmaker has moved from broadcast guest roles to Netflix and MGM+ series, then on to festival film and her own scripted ambitions.
From Fernie to the Netflix call sheet
Ohm grew up skiing in Fernie, British Columbia, and says the same focus that carried her down steep slopes now shapes her acting. In The Betrayers, directed by David Bezmozgis, she plays Leora, a young Israeli woman involved with a disgraced politician while trying to climb the country’s political world. The thriller, set in Crimea, frames that personal choice against Soviet-era political betrayal.
Her earlier credits include Hell on Wheels, Taken and Murdoch Mysteries, plus a one-episode Condor appearance alongside Brendan Fraser. The streaming breakout came with Netflix’s Hit & Run, where she played Danielle, a dancer killed in a car accident in the first episode. The series, led by Fauda star Lior Raz, used flashbacks to investigate her death. COVID-19 delayed production for a year, but Ohm calls the role “totally life-changing.”
Why MGM+’s From matters
On MGM+’s From, Ohm played Marielle Sinclair, a pediatric nurse managing opioid addiction. She joined in season two and was killed in the season four finale. She had first researched withdrawal for the 2023 film Last County, then deepened that work for the series. Viewers told her the character gave them hope through their own addiction struggles.
For programming and casting teams, that is a signal: an actor who can carry a difficult recurring arc inside an already established ensemble has value beyond a single title. Ohm said joining the cast mid-run put her under pressure and initially “destroyed” her, taking months to recover—a useful reminder of the human cost behind fast-turnaround streaming productions.

Her longer-term goal is to direct scripted films, not just music videos for Amaara.
The business takeaway is talent stacking. An actor with Netflix recognition, a durable MGM+ genre character and festival credits becomes a lower-risk option for indie distributors, streamers acquiring festival titles, and content buyers looking for talent with an existing audience. Ohm’s own frame is refusing creative comfort: “when something starts to feel too easy, that’s where I want to find the steeper hill to go down.”
