JioStar expands live-match ChatGPT as data questions mount

What JioStar is building

At FICCI Frames in Mumbai on September 30, JioHotstar sports CEO Ishan Chatterjee said JioStar will deepen the ChatGPT assistant already inside JioHotstar for the IPL. During a live match, fans will be able to ask about a game or a player by voice or text in up to 12 languages. The product road map also includes more camera angles and Swiggy ordering inside the stream, so a viewer does not need to leave the app.

The partnership is not new. JioHotstar and OpenAI first announced the integration on February 19, 2026. JioStar Vice Chairman Uday Shankar described it as “embedding AI at the very core of the user experience”, while OpenAI’s Fidji Simo said the aim was to make live sport a “two-way interaction”.

The scale is substantial: JioStar puts its live-sport calendar at 350 days a year, and says IPL 2026 reached more than 1.2 billion viewers across television and digital, up from about 500 million sports viewers in 2016.

The unanswered data questions

A fan’s interaction with the assistant could connect several signals: what they are watching, when, in which language, where they are, and what they want to know. JioHotstar has not said whether queries run on OpenAI models, what viewing context is sent with a question, where queries are processed, whether OpenAI retains them, or whether they can be used to improve OpenAI’s models. The privacy policy does not mention OpenAI or other AI processors.

Children add another layer. Cricket’s audience includes children, and a voice assistant in Bhojpuri or another regional language is as easy for a 10-year-old to use as for an adult. But JioStar has not explained how it would distinguish a child’s question, restrict use, or obtain verifiable parental consent under Section 9 of the DPDP Act.

The commercial angle also matters. Keeping a viewer inside the stream with Swiggy ordering turns live sport into a storefront, and a conversational layer is a natural recommendation surface. The CCPA’s 2023 dark pattern guidelines bar assistants from steering users toward specific products, and the 2025 online gaming ad ban removes a former IPL revenue stream. That makes in-stream commerce more important for JioStar, not less.

What marketers should track

The audience data is an immediate planning signal. English accounts for less than a tenth of cricket watch time on JioHotstar, while Haryanvi and Bhojpuri are the fastest-growing languages. Any marketer still over-weighting English or standard Hindi may be misreading where live-sport attention is shifting.

  • Voice and text queries in up to 12 languages will change how fans discover match and player information.
  • Swiggy ordering and extra camera angles are retention features, but they also create new commerce surfaces.
  • With DPDP duties not effective until May 2027, there is no immediate regulatory route to force public answers.

What comes next

MediaNama has sent questions to JioStar, OpenAI and Swiggy on processing, retention, child safeguards and data flows. How those companies answer, or do not answer, will signal whether AI-driven live sport is setting a compliance benchmark or a privacy gap.
