Shah Rukh Khan’s King has set a new overseas rights benchmark before its December 24 release. Phars Films has acquired the film’s overseas theatrical rights for a minimum guarantee of ₹175 crore—more than $18 million—making it the largest overseas rights deal for an Indian film, according to a Pinkvilla report cited by The Times of India.
What the ₹175 crore guarantee means
Phars Films is not new to the market. It has worked alongside Yash Raj Films on several titles and independently distributed Prabhas’ Saaho. Until now, YRF handled international releases for Khan’s Pathaan and Jawan in 2023. With this deal, Phars pays the amount upfront as a minimum guarantee, which shifts the risk to the distributor before a single ticket is sold.
The breakeven arithmetic
Overseas distributors typically keep about half of the gross. That means King needs to collect roughly $37–40 million, or ₹350–375 crore, internationally just to recover the guarantee. For comparison, Pathaan and Jawan each brought in close to ₹400 crore abroad. To turn a comfortable profit, King would need to move toward RRR-level international earnings of about ₹430 crore.
- A rights record is a cost, not a profit: the guarantee is paid upfront.
- The working break-even is roughly double the ₹175 crore figure because the distributor keeps about 50% of gross.
- The success test is not the rights deal itself but whether King matches or beats Pathaan and Jawan’s ₹400-crore overseas run.
Why it matters for the screen business
For media planners and entertainment marketers, a record pre-sale is an early demand signal. It shows that overseas distributors are willing to underwrite Shah Rukh Khan’s global pull at an unprecedented level. But the guarantee also raises the bar: if King underperforms in key markets, the distributor’s margin disappears quickly. The first two weekends—especially Gulf, North America, Australia and the UK, where Khan has historically over-indexed—will decide whether the record guarantee looks smart or expensive.
What we know about the film
King is directed by Siddharth Anand, reuniting him with Khan after Pathaan. The cast includes Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Jaideep Ahlawat, Raghav Juyal and Saurabh Shukla. It also marks the first time Khan shares the screen with his daughter Suhana Khan, who made her acting debut in The Archies in 2023. The film is scheduled to open on December 24.
