Poorna Jagannathan Joins Hulu's Young Americans Pilot

Hulu has added Poorna Jagannathan to its Young Americans pilot, filling the adult political anchor in an ensemble that already includes Scott Foley as the President. She will play Maya Washburn, a senator who was once a close friend and political ally of Foley’s character and now channels a disillusioned electorate.

Natalia Leite, who directed on Hulu’s Black Cake and The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, has been tapped to direct the pilot. Bruce Miller, creator of The Handmaid’s Tale, executive produces through White Oak, reuniting with Leite after their Hulu drama work.

The logline sets up a D.C. academy drama where the children of the nation’s elite replay their parents’ political battles. Among the secrets and scandals, a romance between two students from opposing political families pushes tensions toward breaking point. Jagannathan’s son, played by Sam Rechner, falls for the President’s daughter, played by Billie Boullet.

Why this casting matters

For Hulu, the move reads as a bet on cross-platform recognition. Jagannathan arrives with a run of streaming roles across Hulu’s Deli Boys, HBO’s Lanterns, Netflix’s Never Have I Ever and Apple’s Wolfs. She also has Apple TV’s Nocturne premiering October 30. That kind of adult-lead familiarity helps a young ensemble show widen its audience beyond the core teen demo.

The directing choice works similarly. Leite has recent streaming credits on Netflix’s Age of Innocence and Hulu projects, and Miller’s involvement as an executive producer brings an Emmy-winning drama brand to a pilot still competing for a series order.

The pilot’s architecture

  • Maya Washburn (Poorna Jagannathan): senator, former presidential ally, mother to Rechner’s character.
  • Scott Foley: the President, whose daughter is the other half of the forbidden romance.
  • Natalia Leite: pilot director, with Hulu and Netflix credits.
  • Bruce Miller: executive producer via White Oak; Handmaid’s Tale creator.

Chris Hutton and Eddie O’Keefe wrote and executive produce the pilot, with Priscilla Poriand also executive producing through White Oak. 20th Television is the studio.

What to watch next

A pilot order is not a series order. For media planners and streaming buyers, the forward signal is the assembled talent and the sub-genre mix: a political teen drama that can be sold to younger audiences on romance and to older viewers on adult casting and creative pedigree. If Hulu moves it to series, watch how it fits into the platform’s young-adult and drama inventory, where known co-leads help drive sampling.
