Fox News still leads U.S. cable news in total viewers, but its October 2026 Nielsen numbers carry a sharper warning for ad buyers: the network just recorded the largest year-over-year audience drop in the month before a national election among the big three cable news channels in the past decade.
Nielsen put Fox News at an average of 1.68 million viewers in primetime and 1.01 million for the full day. That remains ahead of MS NOW, at 925,000 primetime and 588,000 full day, and CNN, at 598,000 and 402,000. In adults 25-54, Fox News led with 145,000 in primetime and 98,000 total day; CNN had 107,000 and 60,000, and MS NOW had 95,000 and 62,000.
The number that matters
Measured against October 2025, Fox News primetime viewership fell 28 percent and full-day viewership fell 27 percent. The adults 25-54 audience dropped by more than 30 percent. According to The Hollywood Reporter’s comparison of October ratings across the past six national election cycles, no major cable news network had previously suffered a decline that large just before an election.
CNN’s primetime 25-54 audience rose 40 percent year over year in the same period. MS NOW’s 25-54 numbers grew 30 percent in primetime and 38 percent in total day. Both networks also posted double-digit primetime viewer gains; CNN’s full-day audience was up a more modest 3 percent.
The decade context
In previous presidential cycles, October was usually a growth month for all three networks. Fox News improved substantially in October 2024, with total-day ratings up about 20 percent against October 2023. Midterm years have been mixed: the previous biggest pre-election fall was a 20 percent drop in primetime adults 25-54 for MSNBC, MS NOW’s predecessor, in 2022. This October’s 28 percent primetime decline for Fox News sets a new low-water mark.
Reach, demo and momentum
The topline lead and the demo trend tell different stories. Fox News still had the five most-watched cable news shows, led by The Five at 2.7 million daily viewers, and it reported 3.8 billion YouTube views so far in 2026, ahead of MS NOW’s 2.96 billion and CNN’s 2.36 billion. But the linear audience trend has shifted month to month as well.
- Fox News primetime slipped 2.5 percent from September; full day was down 1 percent.
- CNN primetime rose 11 percent month over month; full day was up 8 percent.
- MS NOW primetime grew 10 percent month over month; full day was up 8 percent.
- Fox’s demo losses are steeper than its total-viewer losses: more than 30 percent among adults 25-54.
What it means for planners
For a media plan aimed at broad news reach, Fox News remains the biggest cable news platform. For a plan weighted to adults 25-54, October’s movement suggests those budgets may need to be rechecked. The election cycle is the variable that matters: historical Octobers have usually lifted all three networks, and this time the gains went in the opposite direction.
