Two Malayalam releases are testing how far a mid-budget theatrical run can stretch on weekdays. Jayasurya and Vinayakan’s Titans added only ₹15 lakh on Tuesday, October 27, slipping 28.6% from Monday’s ₹21 lakh. Six days in, the fantasy-crime film has a domestic net of ₹2.31 crore and an India gross of ₹2.67 crore.
Across 590 shows, Tuesday worked out to an average of ₹2,542 per show. The film drew 12,458 footfalls for the day, pushing its cumulative theatrical audience to 177,001. Overall occupancy in the Malayalam 2D version was 11.41% – evening shows led at 10.82%, while morning screenings barely registered at 3.64%.
Orijinal is smaller but steadier
Sreenath Bhasi’s Orijinal, directed by Ramees, held flat at ₹7 lakh on Tuesday for the second consecutive day. It has now banked ₹65 lakh as India and worldwide gross over five days, with a domestic net of ₹58 lakh. After a ₹18-lakh opening on October 23, the film settled into ₹13 lakh for two days before the weekday slide.
What the weekday curve says
The pattern matters more than the totals. Titans opened at ₹65 lakh and its best weekend day was Sunday’s ₹52 lakh net – meaning opening day still stands as the high-water mark. That kind of front-loading, followed by a Monday-Tuesday fade, tells distributors the audience was willing to sample the film early but has not yet converted into repeat or word-of-mouth viewing.
- Day-one ₹65 lakh has not been beaten – the trend is downhill from the start
- Sunday recovered to ₹52 lakh net before weekdays pulled the curve down
- Tuesday’s ₹15 lakh was the lowest reported day of the run
For exhibitors, the operating metric is the per-show average, not the collection total. At ₹2,542 a show and roughly one in nine seats filled, the screens are still earning, but thin occupancy across 590 shows means margins depend on holding costs low. With little competition in Mollywood right now, both films have room – the question is whether the second weekend bends the curve back up.
