Disney+ is adding a UK public service broadcaster to its bundle. From early 2027, Channel 4’s linear HD channel and hundreds of hours of scripted and unscripted programming will sit inside Disney+ at no extra cost.
What’s in the agreement
Multiple Channel 4 shows will land on Disney+ each year at the same time as their release on the broadcaster. The slate named includes psychological thriller Maya, starring Bella Ramsey, comedy Stepping Up and reality format Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.
From 2027, Disney+ subscribers will also be able to watch Channel 4’s linear HD feed alongside its on-demand catalogue. The package sits within the existing subscription, not as an add-on.
Why this is more than a content swap
Disney described the partnership as one of the most significant broadcaster collaborations it has announced globally. For Channel 4, a commercial public service broadcaster, the calculation is distribution: its shows keep their linear slot but gain a streaming window inside a service built for international reach. For Disney+, the win is local relevance in the UK and Ireland without a fresh commissioning spend.
This is the frenemy deal model becoming routine. In June 2025, Netflix partnered with French broadcaster TF1 to give Netflix subscribers in France access to TF1 content. Broadcasters and streamers still compete for attention, but they are finding shared economics in distribution and licensing.
- Channel 4’s linear HD channel joins Disney+
- Hundreds of hours of C4 on-demand programming included
- Select C4 shows release on Disney+ at the same time as on Channel 4
- No extra cost to existing Disney+ subscribers
What to watch next
Priya Dogra, chief executive at Channel 4, called the service a way to give audiences “even more ways to discover and enjoy” Channel 4 shows. Adam Smith, chairman of direct-to-consumer at Disney Entertainment, said local broadcaster partnerships matter as Disney builds content libraries and serves fans.
For media planners and streaming analysts, the practical question is measurement and inventory. If a linear channel is consumed through a Disney+ interface, reach and audience flows may be counted differently in campaigns and trading. Expect both sides to market the bundle as added value rather than a price rise.
Treat this as a signal for more public service broadcaster-streamer deals, especially where a broadcaster has strong local titles but limited global distribution.
